[smartPC사랑=이철호 기자] Graphics card prices are still horrendous. Even though the price of premium graphics cards used only by users, the price of entry-level graphics cards has risen sharply. This is a really bad time for consumers who want to upgrade their computers to match the new masterpiece games, and for PC bangs who want to replace old graphics cards in the with Corona era.
As cheap and usable graphics cards are so rare, under the name of ‘entry-level VGA’, we have reached an era where we can’t even sell graphics cards like Nvidia’s GeForce GT1030 and GeForce GTX 750 Ti. Of course, it’s not that I like this kind of graphics card. As such, it is difficult to find an entry-level graphics card with adequate performance and affordable price.
Could the AMD Radeon RX 6600 be a lifesaver for gamers choking on graphics card prices? This graphics card is expected to become another option for those who are looking for an entry-level graphics card with adequate performance based on game performance optimized for 1080p resolution. Let’s take a closer look at the AMD Radeon RX 6600.
|boost clock||Up to 2,491 MHz|
|GDDR6 memory||Up to 8GB|
|Price (USD SEP)||$329|
Unmatched 1080p gaming performance
The new AMD Radeon RX 6600 is the entry-level version of the RX 6600 XT that was launched in September. As a result, the number of compute units and ray accelerators has been reduced from 32 to 28, and game clocks and boost clocks have also decreased compared to the RX 6600 XT.
However, it does not change that it shows excellent performance in a 1080p gaming environment. This is because not only the latest RDNA 2 architecture based on the 7nm process is applied, but also a more powerful compute unit than the previous generation, new AMD Infinity Cache, and 8GB GDDR6 memory.
So, AMD Radeon RX 6600 provides 1080p performance that is consistent with the latest blockbuster games, including the recently released ‘Far Cry 6’. In addition, it shows excellent performance in ‘Overwatch’ and ‘Battleground’ where many professional gamers play.
Reduced power burden with excellent electric performance
Recently released graphic cards have relatively low power efficiency, so there are many products that require high output power of 700W or more. Even if we put aside environmental issues for a while, it is not inconvenient for consumers who have to purchase a graphics card with a lot of money, but also have to change the power.
In contrast, AMD Radeon RX 6600 is very power efficient. This graphics card averages 1.3 times better performance per watt than the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060. TBP is 132W, and it can be used enough if the power is in the 450~500W range.
Try it with the latest Windows 11 AMD system
The AMD Radeon RX 6600 is compatible with Windows 11 OS, so you can play your favorite games on the latest OS. In particular, when combined with an AMD Ryzen processor, its performance can be further enhanced. This is because AMD Smart Access Memory allows the CPU to utilize 100% of the GPU memory to experience higher frame rates.
If you play ‘Far Cry 6’ or ‘Resident Hazard Village’, try using AMD Fidelity FX Super Resolution (FSR). This feature allows a spatial upscaling algorithm to boost the frame rate while preserving as much image quality as possible, balancing image quality and performance.
SAPPHIRE Radeon RX 6600 PULSE OC D6 8GB Dual-X Checked performance?
The AMD Radeon RX 6600 will be released through major graphics card manufacturers such as ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, and ASRock. The model to be used in this RX 6600 benchmark is the SAPPHIRE Radeon RX 6600 PULSE OC D6 8GB Dual-X. This graphic card minimizes heat generation with 90mm dual cooling fans composed of hybrid fan blades.
In addition, two 6mm heatpipes and a large heatsink realize lower temperature even during long gaming sessions, and the design and stability of the aluminum back plate are taken care of. A high-quality power supply, fuse protection circuit, and GDDR6 memory are also mounted. Other benchmark system specifications are as follows.
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X
motherboard: ASUS X570 ROG CrossHair VIII HERO (Wi-Fi)
RAM: PNY XLR8 DDR4 16G PC4-3600 Gaming(8GB x2)
cooler: Corsair HYDRO SERIES H115i
SSD: Seagate Firecuda 520 M.2 NVMe
Power: Micronics Classic II 850W 80PLUS GOLD 230V EU Full Modular
YOU: Windows 10 Pro 21H1 (64bit)
Check the graphics card performance
What about the main game?
I took a look at the AMD Radeon RX 6600. It’s a bit lower than the previously released RX 6600 XT, but it’s enough to enjoy a recently released blockbuster game like Far Cry 6 at 60 frames or more. This performance is convincing even for users who want a graphics card for popular games such as League of Legends, Overwatch, and Battlegrounds.
Of course, it’s a bit disappointing to see a noticeable drop in performance when ray tracing is enabled. However, at least the performance of the graphics card itself is definitely improved compared to the previous generation. It is a satisfactory performance for an entry graphics card.
What matters is the price. If there is one fortunate thing, the price of the graphics card, which has soared without realizing it, is gradually stabilizing. If sufficient quantities are supplied and it is released at a reasonable price, it will be a good alternative for users who cry because they cannot replace the graphics card.
