11 Discoveries of Indonesian Scientists Recognized by the World, What are they?


Jakarta – Producing discoveries and research results that are beneficial to mankind is a noble thing. The invention of the light bulb, telephone, and electricity is one of the discoveries of scientists from various countries that can be felt to this day.

Not only foreign scientists, apparently there are many discoveries from Indonesian scientists who are recognized by the world. Some of them get patents, save many human lives, and benefit the environment and the future of the earth.

1. Chromosome Number Facts

Each human being has 26 pairs or 46 chromosomes that carry billions of DNA in the body. Discovery of Dr. Joe Hin Tjio in 1956 was published in Hereditas, a credible international journal of genetics.

Dr. Joe Hin Tjio (1919-2001) is a scientist born in Pekalongan, Central Java. Research Dr. Joe Hin Tjio conducted at the Institute of Genetics of Sweden at the University of Lund, Sweden. For his achievements, Dr. Joe Hin Tjio was also awarded the International Prize from Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Foundations.

2. Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever Eradication Technology

Wolbachia bacteria that are inserted into the Aedes aegypti mosquito apparently makes mosquitoes unable to transfer the dengue virus to humans. This was found by Professor of Public Health Prof. dr. Adi Utarini, MSc, MPH, PhD with the team in the Eliminate Dengue Project in Yogyakarta.

Aedes aegypti mosquitoes with bacteria that are released wild and allowed to breed will produce a generation of tame mosquitoes, thereby preventing the outbreak of dengue hemorrhagic fever.

The discovery of Prof. Adi Utarini and his team managed to reduce cases of dengue fever by up to 77 percent in a number of big cities in Indonesia. This achievement made Prof. Uut is on the list of Nature’s 10: Ten People Who Helped Shape Science in 2020 from the scientific journal Nature and the World’s 100 Influential People 2021.

3. Micro Hydro Power Plant (MHP)

Micro-hydro power plants (PLTMH) allow residents of remote villages to be illuminated by electric lights powered by the surrounding water resources. This power plant is the fruit of Tri Mumpuni’s idea through the Institute of Business and People’s Economy (IBEKA) which he leads and executed by the residents with the help of experts.

To date, IBEKA has built at least 65 MHP in various villages in remote parts of the country. For his achievements, Tri Mumpuni was included in the list of 22 Most Influential Muslim Scientist of the 500 Most Influential Muslims released by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Center.

4. Sosrobahu Construction

The Sosrobahu Construction or Barrier-Free Rotating Platform (LPBH) system is a system that allows the construction of flyovers without causing traffic jams and disturbances.

The LPBH system or Sosrobahu construction was designed by Tjokorda Raka Sukawati, an alumnus of civil engineering at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). This scientist’s work was then used to build a bridge in Seattle.

5. Crack Propagation

Hundreds of new planetary nebulae discovered by Prof. Dr. Mezak Arnold Ratag, a scientist from Malang, East Java. The discovery of the scientist who was born on September 4, 1962 has been published in more than 100 national and international scientific papers. Name Prof. Mezak is immortalized in 120 Planetary Nebula Clusters such as the Ratag-Zijlstra-Pottasch-Menzies and Ratag-Pottasch clusters.

7. 4G LTE technology

The concept of Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) or 4G LTE technology became the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) standard which was patented in 2005 on behalf of Assoc. Prof. Dr. eng. Khoirul Anwar, ST, M.Eng., Indonesian scientist born in Kediri.

The scientist who graduated from Japan’s Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST) also has a patent for an illegal transmitter detection system that has the potential to be used in 5G technology.

8. Anti -Fire Materials

The active substance of cassava peel, such as trypotassium citrate, can apparently be developed into various anti-fire products. The fire-resistant products include wood coating paint that makes it fire resistant for 200 years. In addition, the substance can be put into a spray tube as a flame extinguishing agent.

This discovery was made by Randall Hartolakosono, an Indonesian scientist an alumnus of Mechanical Engineering at the University of London. The work of the scientist who was called ‘Hart’ by his lecturers was later known as an environmentally friendly fire-resistant product used by Petronas Malaysia and abroad.

The chicken claw construction method was discovered by Prof. Ir. Sedyatmo, an alumnus of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). This method is then used in various developments at home and abroad.

10. Eco-Friendly Stove

Dr.rer.nat Muhammad Nurhuda created the Development of Energy Saving and Environmentally Friendly Biomass Stoves. The stove, which was researched by Professor of Computational Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Brawijaya is known in Asia Pacific countries to America. In 2011. Nurhuda received the Energy Initiative Award from the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM).

This alumnus of Gadjah Mada University (UGM) has also developed a Pilot Plan for Waste Gasification into Syngas for Environmentally Friendly Alternative Electric Energy Generation, a waste treatment power plant design that is less than the WHO minimum limit, in addition to writing scientific publications in various international journals.

11. Solving the Helmhotz . Equation

The mathematician who was born in Tasikmalaya, West Java, Yogi Ahmad Erlangga, managed to solve the Helmholtz equation using numerical mathematics quickly. The ITB Aviation Engineering lecturer found that the “Helmhotz equation” method can speed up seismic data processing in surveys of petroleum reserves.

The findings of the alumnus of the Aeronautics and Astronautics Study Program, Aviation Engineering, ITB, found that the Helmholtz equation made seismic data processing a hundred times faster. His research during his thesis at Delf University of Technology attracted international oil companies interested in funding his research.
