12 people died of covid-19 in a nursing home in California

(CNN) — Twelve residents of a nursing home in Northern California have died from COVID-19, the facility announced this week.

The Gilroy Health and Rehabilitation Center said in a statement Thursday that 75 residents and 54 employees tested positive for the virus during the course of the covid-19 pandemic. Since then, 63 residents and 53 employees have recovered, he said.

It is not clear from the press release when the infections and deaths occurred.

“To add an additional level of protection, we are committed to testing all residents and staff at all facilities in collaboration with local public health departments,” the center said in a statement.

“We understand the importance of knowing the status of our residents, employees, and essential healthcare providers. In this new world of covid-19, rest assured that we are aggressively treating and responding to potential community exposures by routinely testing all of our residents and staff until such time as a vaccine is available. or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate otherwise.

Since the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic has come at a devastating cost to nursing home residents, with facilities across the country becoming hotspots for the virus and reporting dozens of deaths and infections.

Covid-19 outbreaks across the United States

Some public health officials in recent days have sounded the alarm about infections in more facilities.

In Washington state, Whatcom County health officials announced an outbreak among residents and staff at the Highland Health and Rehabilitation nursing facility that began in mid-September.

At least 37 residents tested positive, 10 of whom died, health officials said in an Oct.9 news release. 17 staff members were also infected, health officials said.

In Minnesota, the state National Guard was called in to help with two covid-19 outbreaks in nursing homes, CNN affiliate KQDS reported. In a statement posted on Facebook last week, the Guardian Angels Health and Rehabilitation Center said the national guard would provide “personnel assistance.”

The Sacred Heart Care Center, the second facility to receive assistance, said in another statement that it was banning visits, with a few exceptions, and conducting weekly covid-19 tests for all staff, among other efforts.

En Virginia

Virginia health officials said this week that four people died and more than 80 tested positive for COVID-19 in a retirement community in Chesterfield County, according to CNN affiliate WTVR.

“VDH has provided infection control recommendations, conducted a site visit, and regularly monitored the facility since it learned,” Brookie Crawford of the state Department of Health told the news station. “The facility also continues to conduct additional tests.”

And in Connecticut, health officials were monitoring outbreaks at a nursing home and assisted living facility, CNN affiliate WTIC reported. At the nursing facility, at least 22 residents tested positive, the member reported.
