A girl of only three years old shot her mother when they were in the car with the gun that her father left loaded. The woman, identified as Shaneque Thomas, 21, is in the hospital in a critical situation, although stable.

Thomas was in the front of the car Tuesday in a parking lot of a shopping center in Merrillville, Indiana, waiting for his partner, who had entered a used clothing store. According to the authorities, the girl found the revolver loaded and, accidentally, ended up seriously injuring her mother. The bullet went through the passenger seat and hit the woman’s shoulder and chest.

In the back of the vehicle was the other son of the couple, one year old.

“(The girl) had no idea what she was doing,” said Detective James Bogner.

The father, identified as Menzo Brazien, was arrested by police on charges of endangering the children, the Lake County Sheriff’s Department said.

“There was blood coming out of his stomach, coming out as if it were water, like a tap and I shouted ‘Somebody call 911,’” said Hadassah Zirkle, quoted by NBC Chicago .

“This should not have happened, you have to be responsible.” The girl (…) found the 9mm gun on the opposite console, “Joe Petruch, Merrillville police chief, told a news conference.

“It was a criminal act without meaning,” said Petruch, who recalled that gun owners should keep them away from minors.

“I went to see what was happening and, when I was there, I saw the girl like she was falling because she had a lot, a lot of blood,” said Paloma Prieto to Univision Noticias.

“The woman’s boyfriend was in our store buying and ran to her and asked her if she had shot herself,” Zirkle said.

Business workers grabbed the children so they would not see what had happened and protect them from the chaos that was going on. Apparently, the girl had blood on her jacket.

“He was looking at me, stroking my neck, just hugging me, I told him everything was fine,” Zirkle said.

The children are now in the custody of the Department of Children’s Services (Indiana Department of Child Services).
