LONDON (AFP) – British health authorities say at least 57 athletes suffered diarrhea and vomiting after swimming in the British leg of the Triathlon World Series because of dirty water.
The British in the World Triathlon Series recently debuted. British health authorities said that at least 57 athletes were sick after participating in the swimming session, with symptoms of diarrhea and vomiting.
Around 2,000 people took part in the British stage of the triathlon world championship series (World Triathlon Championship Series) in Sunderland (Sunderland) in the north-east of England last weekend. One of the competitions was on the coast of (Roker Beach) in Sunderland swimming.
The UK Health Security Agency (UK Health Security Agency) said this weekend that authorities are investigating the possible causes of the situation and will also ask those affected to fill out questionnaires and provide samples for testing.
Just days before the first game, the Rock’s Environmental Protection Unit did a routine test in late July and found a high amount of E. coli in the water.
But British Triathlon said the tests were carried out outside the competition water and the results were not published until after the race had started.
The association emphasized that the results of their own inspection showed that the water quality meets the standards required by the competition.
One of the competitors, Australian triathlete Jake Birtwhistle, said on Instagram that he was “very uncomfortable after the race”.
“Should cancel swimming,” he added, attaching a photo of a chart from the Rock’s water test.
The Guardian newspaper reported that the race was taking place near the coastline, which has been at the heart of a long-running battle between activists and the government over sewage discharges.
The local water company, Northumbrian Water, insisted that from 2021 Roque did not discharge sewage that “may have a negative impact on water quality”.
The local environmental protection unit states that the “temporary deterioration” of water quality may be related to several factors, “including heavy rains”.
In addition, the Olympic water swimming test event due for the weekend was also canceled due to heavy rains in Paris that polluted the Seine River.
