California on Thursday announced a state stay-at-home order for the entire population, the strictest effort by the United States so far to stem the spread of the new coronavirus.
The decision in California occurs at a time when the virus is expanding more and more in the United States.
The entity’s governor, Gavin Newsom, asked President Donald Trump on Thursday to deploy a Navy medical ship to help the state expand its health care capacity, and warned that more than half of the inhabitants of the most populous state from the US could contract the new coronavirus.
In a letter dated Wednesday, Newsom asked Trump to send the USNS Mercy medical ship to the port of Los Angeles to be used until September 1.
California has provided disproportionate help to people returning to the country from abroad and needs the boat to help “unzip” their health system while increasing the infection rate, Newsom wrote. The ship is docked in San Diego.
Meanwhile, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said the city has enough medical supplies to last two to three weeks, and it also needs military assistance.
Earlier, the United States warned Americans not to travel abroad and recommended that those abroad be returned home. US Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell launched a massive stimulus plan for consumers, businesses and local governments.
Furthermore, the death toll in Italy exceeded those in China, which again reported that there were no new cases in the initial epicenter of the outbreak, Wuhan City. India urged its 1.3 billion citizens to remain in case and banned all flights from abroad for one week.
