But, with an out-of-short settlement finally reached, I can reveal Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are determined to be friends.
The Mr & Mrs Smith are taking on a new role in the care of their children.
My source reveals: "The whole process of divorcing has been a long, drawn-out battle for Brad and Angelina. But they are both happy they are going to be friends.
"They realize they will always be in each other's lives and want to get to where they can hang out and have a laugh together for the sake of the kids."
The stars separated in September 2016 after two years of marriage, with Angelina, 43, citing "irreconcilable differences" when she filed for divorce.
Angelina's lawyer did not say how it would be divided.
The couple puts on the set of the movie Mr. & Mrs. Smith in 2004 and were together for 10 years before they wed.
The marriage was Brad's second, the actor having previously been wed to star Jennifer Aniston.

The pair became embroiled in a bitter child custody battle after Angelina announced the split.
At one stage, Brad, 54, has been investigated for possible child abuse. He was later cleared of the allegations.
They have yet to reach a final divorce settlement.
