Jorge Fernandez Menendez, journalist, analyst and columnist at the newspaper ExcelsiorHe was surprised at the arrest of the former head of National Defense, Salvador Cienfuegos, accused of five crimes, among which is drug trafficking.
“It is an accusation that I do not understand. Even looking at today’s statements by the president, the significance of the fact that they arrested a retired former defense secretary today, qualify him as a drug trafficker It just seems crazy to me becauseOperationally, that cannot be done by a secretary of defense, he said.
Regarding President López Obrador’s warning that members of the Army who have ties to former Secretary Cienfuegos will be suspended from their positions, the analyst said that he would have to start with General Luis Cresencio Sandoval.
“Unfortunately, it would have to begin by separating the current Secretary of Defense from his position, as well as each and every one of the generals who are active today in the Mexican Army, (because) they were all part of General Cienfuegos’ command team”, said the security specialist in an interview with Pascal Beltrán del Río.
He considered that this arrest “is the most delicate issue that has been had with the United States (since) it is not a bilateral operation, there is no investigation or a single accusation in Mexico that relates General Cienfuegos to drug trafficking issues, on the contrary, he was always described as tough characters in the fight against drug trafficking ”.
For Fernández Menéndez, this fact “is a sign of the weakness of the Mexican government, the response it gave should at least demand to know the evidence and demand that it be informed with some anticipation of an action of this nature.”
