However, the Australians were beaten by the Italians for their first match at the World Cup-2019.

Italy has created the surprise Sunday 9 June by defeating Australia (1-2) in the first match of Group C at Valenciennes.

The Matildas, with their 12 players in the United States, including star Sam Kerr, were clearly favorites against the Italian ghosts, back after almost twenty years of absence in the competition.

It was the Australians who opened the scoring on 22e minute thanks to Sam Kerr who caused a penalty. The star striker was responsible for shooting him, but was dismissed by Italian goalkeeper Laura Giulani. The ball finally returned to Sam Kerr's feet, which did not fail to propel him into the net.

Ten minutes after the return of the locker room, Italy equalized on a goal from Barbara Bonansea who managed to sneak into the box and get rid of the Italian defense. The Azzurres have finally won the victory in added time, still thanks to Barbara Bonansea, head to the far post on a free kick.

In the other match of Group C, the Brazilians, finalists in 2007, are opposed (from 15:30) to the Jamaican "Reggae Girlz", who play their first World Cup, 21 years after the one played by their male counterparts in 1998 in France .
