Banco Santander mistakenly deposits more than US $ 176 million to its clients in the United Kingdom

The error would have been caused by a technical failure due to programming problems, which led to the original payments being doubled.

Without thinking, thousands of Britons mistakenly received from Banco Santander in the UK more money than they should have received. The company chaired by Ana Botín made by mistake the deposit of US $ 176 million in 75 thousand transactions to clients of the financial institution.

According to information published by The Times, the Spanish company is working to recover the money that was accidentally deposited on December 25.

The error would have been caused by a technical failure due to scheduling problems which led to the original payments being doubled.

According to the British media, the money transferred not only reached Santander accounts, but also its rival banks such as Barclays, HSBC, NatWest, Co-operative Bank and Virgin Money.

From Santander they stated that “We regret that due to a technical problem, some payments from our corporate clients have been incorrectly duplicated on recipient accounts.”

They added that “None of our clients ever ran out of money for this reason and we will work hard with many banks across the UK to recover duplicate transactions in the coming days.”

It was specified that the money transferred incorrectly did not affect customer funds, but the bank’s own resources.

Santander has an important presence in the United Kingdom and has 450 branches with more than 20 thousand workers.
