A 78-year-old Belgian was killed on Sunday afternoon in an accident on the A3 motorway, near Berschis (canton of St. Gallen), in eastern Switzerland.

Despite an attempt at resuscitation, the victim died at the scene of the accident, possibly due to a medical problem. An investigation is underway to determine if this factor may also have caused the accident.

The driver was driving in the passing lane in the direction of Zurich, says the cantonal police of St. Gallen. For reasons as yet unknown, it swerved to the left and struck the center guardrail, then the guardrail on the right side of the road, before finally coming to a stop after hitting the center guard again.

When the police arrived at the scene, the man was sitting behind the wheel of his car and was unresponsive. Despite attempts at resuscitation, he died at the scene. Police are trying to find out if he suffered from a medical problem before the accident.

The motorway had to be closed from Flums from 2:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. to allow investigation of the accident. Traffic was severely affected.
