With a multi-billion dollar investment program, the logistics group Deutsche Post DHL wants to strengthen its lucrative business with express services.
In future, more than one billion euros will be spent each year on sorting systems, aircraft and vehicles, the company said in Troisdorf, not far from Cologne / Bonn Airport. Also training of the employees would be financed. In recent years, it was according to company information a little less, a concrete comparison number was not mentioned.
At the airport on Tuesday, the company officially opened a new hub, which had been built for 123 million euros. Each night, up to 14 DHL Express machines arrive at the airport. The company was previously active at the site, but has now expanded it. The strongest express hub in Germany and Europe remains Leipzig with up to 70 machines per night.
Express deliveries are the most profitable business for the logistics group. Approximately 100,000 people are employed in this area of the Bonn-based Group worldwide, accounting for about one in five Group employees. Big competitors are UPS and Fedex. Especially companies use the services to send contracts, reports or spare parts with a guaranteed delivery time. Compared to regular mail and regular parcel services, Express is much more expensive – and therefore very lucrative for the service provider.
For a long time private customers only played a minor role in the business model, but in view of the booming online trade, they are becoming more important. When private individuals order expensive electronics or luxury bicycles on the Internet, they often choose Express as the transit route.
