(Reuters) – British shale gas company Cuadrilla Resources said tremor 2.1 ML on the Richter scale was recorded at the company's shale gas exploration site late Saturday.
“We can confirm that a micro-seismic event measuring 2.1 ML (local size) occurred on the Richter scale at New Preston Road. This lasted for about 1 second and as a result a land offer was less than 1.5 mm / s. Hydraulic break was not held at a time ”, a company spokesman said.
The British media reported earlier that the tremor was the “largest (s) detected” at the one active detector site in the UK.
The company said the event was “nothing underneath” that could harm individuals or their property.
Saturday's appearance was only a day after another tremor measured 1.55 ML (local size) on the Richter scale that occurred on Wednesday.
After tremor on Wednesday, the company ripped at cracking at Preston's New Road site in Lancashire, northwest England.
Chuadrilla was forced to stop operations last year under a British traffic light control system, which immediately suspended work if a seismic activity of 0.5 or more was detected.
Cracking, or hydraulic fracture, involves extracting gas from rocks by breaking them up with water and high pressure chemicals.
Environmentalists are strongly opposed to it and says that increasing fossil fuel consumption is in line with the British commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
