PHNOM PENH, February 22 (Xinhua) – Cambodia said Saturday that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is fully confident in China’s ability to control and contain the spread of COVID-19.
“ASEAN Foreign Ministers expressed full confidence in the Chinese government and people to overcome the epidemic and, in return, their Chinese counterpart extended its appreciation to ASEAN Member States for sympathy, support and assistance, “said a statement from the Cambodian Foreign Ministry.
The statement was released after Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn returned from a special meeting of foreign ministers between ASEAN and China on COVID-19, which was held Thursday in Vientiane, Laos.
ASEAN brings together Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
During the meeting, Prak Sokhonn, who is also the deputy prime minister, reiterated Cambodia’s commitment to continue to firmly support the Chinese government and people in the fight against COVID-19, the statement said.
Or Vandine, secretary of state and spokesperson for Cambodia’s Ministry of Health, said the meeting results clearly reflect China’s and ASEAN’s solidarity and commitment to the joint fight against the virus.
“We see that China has spared no effort to contain the spread of the virus and we are very confident in its ability to contain it because China has enough resources, both human and medical, to control and contain the spread of the virus,” said Xinhua. “I firmly believe that China will win the fight against the virus in the near future.”
Cambodia’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Koy Kuong said he praised and appreciated China’s efforts to contain the epidemic.
“China has taken smart, quick and effective measures to control and contain the virus,” he told Xinhua. Enditem
