Candidates have until tomorrow to choose ballot partners

Although the Central Electoral Board (JCE) has extended the deadline for the parties to register their presidential and congressional candidacies, even several political organizations have not done so nor made it clear who will be the candidate for the vice presidency.

The deadline for political parties to register their presidential and congressional candidacies expires tomorrow. On February 24, the candidate of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), Gonzalo Castillo, announced that his ballot companion will be the current vice president Margarita Cedeño, who has held the position twice, from 2016 until this 2020, next to President Danilo Medina.

Abinader case

Luis Abinader, the main presidential candidate of the opposition, was elected as the presidential figure of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) in the primaries of October 6, and since then it is unknown who will be the person to accompany him as a ballot companion. Abinader was a presidential candidate in the 2016 elections, where he faced President Danilo Medina, who was seeking his re-election to office. Abinader has toured several provinces and municipalities of the country, in support of the different candidates for mayor of the PRM, but on no occasion has he been accompanied by a person who generates the rumor or interest that may be his companion on the ballot.

In recent weeks the names of Sonia Guzmán, Milagros Germán, Faride Raful and David Collado have resonated as possible electoral companions.

Leonel case

Another of the presidential candidates and who still does not reveal who will accompany him, is the former president of the Republic, Leonel Fernández, who after leaving the ranks of the PLD, decided to create the political organization Fuerza del Pueblo.

His candidacy received several challenges before the Superior Electoral Court and the Constitutional Court, before the latter on the initiative of the PLD, which requested that the prohibition of transfuguism and double participation in processes of election of candidates for the same electoral process be prohibited. , the TSE said that the Electoral Law could not impose on Fernández greater requirements than those established in the Constitution

Fernández was president in 1996-2000, with Jaime David Fernández Mirabal as his vice president. He then returned to power in 2004-2008 and continued in 2008-2012, with Rafael Alburquerque, as a formula partner.

Abinader was a vice presidential candidate in the 2010 elections with Hipólito Mejía, when they belonged to the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD).

Former president

Leonel Fernández was president in the periods 1996-2000, 2004-2008 and 2008-2010, leading the ballot when he belonged to the PLD, which he left after his defeat in the primaries of October 6 with a complaint of fraud.
