Merdeka.com – Junior Doctor Network, dr. Vito Anggarino Damay, reminded the public’s habit of smoking is very risky during this pandemic. Not only disturbing the heart and lungs, various infectious diseases including Covid-19 are also susceptible to infection. This risk also lurks passive smokers.

“People who smoke are more at risk of being treated for serious illnesses including COVID-19 as well,” he explained in a Productive Dialogue with the theme ‘Watching Non-Communicable Diseases to Stay Productive and Safe COVID-19’ at the Media Center Committee for Handling COVID-19 and National Economic Recovery ( KPCPEN), written on Wednesday (11/11).

The high risk is because the smoker touches his mouth repeatedly when holding a cigarette. The hands of a person who smokes are not necessarily clean and may be contaminated with the virus.

This risk must also be watched out for by passive smokers, who can also be infected with various other infectious diseases during the Covid-19 period. “Passive smokers are the most pity, because they don’t seem to know anything. They don’t feel good, they actually inhale the smoke, they are even affected,” he added.

In addition, the content of cigarettes and smoke produced has the potential to reduce the work of immune cells in the body. “Because of the smoke (cigarettes), there are inflammatory cells, which cause our body’s defense capacity to decrease. That’s why it’s easy to catch Covid-19, or other infectious diseases, because its body defenses are reduced,” said dr. Vito.

Therefore, during a pandemic, people are urged to reduce and even stop smoking. Replace with a healthy lifestyle and eat nutritious foods, such as eating lots of vegetables and fruits. (mdk / bim)
