The CDU is wrestling hard for the chairmanship. Party leader Kramp-Karrenbauer doesn’t like that at all. She warns of permanent damage to the Union.
The outgoing CDU-Chairwoman Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer has accused the candidates for their successor of having damaged the party with a destructive competition. “The party sensed during this discussion that this fair race has turned into a ruinous competition. And this ruinous competition first and foremost falls back on the candidates themselves, but also on the CDU, “she told the Augsburger Allgemeine.” That’s why I always warned against it. “
Applicants are the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia Armin Laschet, the economic politician Friedrich Merz and the foreign policy maker Norbert Röttgen. In the struggle to postpone the upcoming party congress, Merz in particular had fought an open dispute with Laschet, with some personal attacks.
“Today the CDU is a different party”
Kramp-Karrenbauer called on all three again to put themselves in the service of the party even in the event of a defeat. “That is the clear expectation of the members. We are already in the election year in January,” she said.
Kramp-Karrenbauer also warned against a backward-looking election campaign: “The CDU has developed very strongly in recent years and decades. It is a different party today than it was 10 or 20 years ago, also because we are a different society today to have.” It must “provide answers to the questions from 2021 and not to those from the 80s”.
