Champions League: Leipzig vs Liverpool match will finally be played in Budapest

The English champions will have to travel to Budapest to play their Champions League round of 16 first leg against RB Leipzig. Liverpool’s Champions League round of 16 first leg against RB Leipzig will take place in Budapest.

On Thursday, it was announced that Liverpool could not travel to Germany for the February 16 game due to the country’s coronavirus protocols, forcing Leipzig to find an alternative. The match will now be played at Puskas Arena in Hungary, with the Reds confirming the news on Saturday afternoon. “Liverpool’s Champions League round of 16, first leg against RB Leipzig, will be played in Budapest,” the club said.

“The Hungarian capital will host the match between the two teams at Puskas Arena on Tuesday February 16, as German Covid-19 regulations prevent the Reds from playing the match at Red Bull Arena. The return leg will be played at Anfield on Wednesday March 10. ”

The Bundesliga club have issued their own statement, which gives more details on the change of venue: “After the Federal Police rejected the Liverpool team’s request to enter Germany, RB Leipzig found a another venue for the next event in consultation with UEFA and Liverpool FC. ”

“The game against Liverpool will be played at the Puskas Arena in Budapest. The Puskas Arena hosts the home matches of the Hungarian national team and some of the upcoming matches of the UEFA Euro 2021.

“Ferencvaros also played two of his three home games in the 2020-2021 UEFA Champions League group stage at Puskas Arena.”

Leipzig escaped UEFA sanction for finding a new meeting place before February 8, as they previously risked losing the first leg by forfeit 3-0.
