Despite the pandemic and devastating effects on the world economy, 2020 was a more than positive year for the fortunes of the richest people in the world. And it is that Forbes magazine published its traditional ranking, realizing that the more millionaires increased their net worth by more than US $ 5 trillion, a figure never seen before.
On the other hand, the number of rich people included in the publication shot up to 2,755, that is, 660 more than a year ago. From Forbes they highlight that the increase is due to the rise of cryptocurrencies, the rise of Special Purpose Acquisition Companies (SPAC, acronym in English), the openings in the stock market and the boom of companies related to health in the face of the coronavirus.
Forbes used stock prices and exchange rates on March 5 to calculate net values. A variety of assets were considered, including companies, real estate, art pieces, among others.
For the fourth year in a row, Jeff Bezos is the richest person in the world, accumulating a fortune of US $ 177 billion, that is, US $ 64 billion more than a year ago as a result of the increase in Amazon shares. Elon Musk, had a monumental leap from 31st to 2nd with a fortune of US $ 151 billion before a rise of 705% in the shares of Tesla. French luxury goods mogul Bernard Arnault holds his place at number three with nearly $ 150 billion.
And the Chileans?
In the midst of parliamentary discussion of a tax on the super rich to help cope with the effects of the pandemic, the list of Chileans had no surprises in terms of names. Led locally Iris Fontbona and Luksic family with US $ 23.3 billion, which is a jump of US $ 12,500 million compared to the last edition.
The Luksic family controls Antofagasta Minerals, an entity that has benefited from the strong jump in copper. In addition, with Quiñenco they participate in Banco de Chile, CCU, Enex, Hapag-Lloyd, Compañía Sudamericana de Vapores, among other firms.
Julio Ponce Lerou appears in second place with a record of US $ 4.1 billion, compared to the US $ 1.7 billion it showed last year. The businessman’s main asset is his stake in SQM, one of the best performing stocks on the stock market given the good outlook for lithium.
In third place appears Horst Paulmann and family with $ 3.3 billion, with a jump of US $ 300 million. Cencosud, linked to the businessman, has been one of the retail firms that has best faced the effects of the pandemic due to its high exposure to supermarkets.
Further back appears the President Piñera and Family with an estimated fortune of US $ 2,900 million, which is an increase compared to the US $ 2,600 million evidenced in the last edition of the ranking.
A few days ago it was known that trusts that the president has increased by 2.3% given the good performance of investments abroad.
The list of Chileans Completed by Roberto Angelini US $ 2 billion (US $ 1.3 billion in 2019), Álvaro Saieh US $ 1.8 billion (US$ 1.300 millones), Patricia Angelini US $ 1.6 billion (US$ 1.000 millones), Luis Enrique Yarur US $ 1,300 millions (US$ 1.500 millones).
With this, during 2020 the fortune of Chilean millionaires analyzed by Forbes reached US $ 40.3 billion, which is a 73% jump compared to the figures of the same ranking in its previous version.
