The new compact sedan from Škoda already knows its name. As expected, her name will be Slavia.
Today, Škoda is leading the Group’s car development for the Indian market, for which it is preparing specifically designed models. The first one on sale, the Kushaq city SUV, is now the second result of the India 2.0 project, a compact sedan. As expected, it will be called Škoda Slavia.
The Mladá Boleslav carmaker has officially confirmed the use of this name, which has been speculated for for many weeks. It does not refer to the eponymous Prague football club stitched, but to the complete beginnings of the manufacturer’s history. In 1896, Václav Laurin and Václav Klement began selling their bicycles under the trade name Slavia.
“Škoda has a rich international legacy for over 125 years. The name Slavia represents the beginnings of a success story in which Škoda Auto became one of the most successful carmakers. This traditional name now marks the beginning of a new era for the Škoda brand, this time in the Indian market, ”explains Zac Hollis, Head of Škoda Auto India, about the use of this name.
According to earlier information, the Škoda Slavia will be a compact sedan with a length of about 4.48 meters, which will replace the Rapid model. In India, however, a specific variant is sold, completely different from the car of the same name previously also offered in our country. The Indian Rapid is a small sedan based on the technology of the second generation Fabia. He originally shared with her the solution of the leading parts, before he optically approached the Fabia III.
The basis will be the MQB-A0 platform adapted to the Indian market. Slavia will share it with the Kushaq SUV, which also indicates the range of novelty engines. Following its example, a compact sedan could offer exclusively supercharged petrol units, a three-cylinder 1.0 TSI (85 kW) and a four-cylinder 1.5 TSI (110 kW). MQB-A0 then primarily means localized production, up to 95% of components are to come from Indian suppliers.
Slavia will officially introduce itself later this year, while the coronavirus pandemic has postponed its premiere once again – it was originally supposed to make its debut a year ago. In the hierarchy of the Indian offer of Škoda, it settles under Superb and Octavia. On the same basis, the compact sedan in India will also be offered by the parent Volkswagen.
At the same time, Škoda hopes that Slavia will build on the initial successes of the Kushaq model. It was launched on the Indian market in July 2021, but has had more than 10,000 orders on its account since then.
