Coronavirus survives five times longer than flu virus

According to a study by Japanese researchers, the novel coronavirus can survive on human skin 5 times as long as the flu virus. According to the study published in the journal “Clinical Infectious Diseases”, the SARS-CoV-2 virus remains active for up to 9 hours, while the influenza A virus that causes influenza only survives 1.8 hours.

The risk of infection can be reduced by regular and thorough hand washing, as recommended by the World Health Organization, the researchers write. Both the coronavirus and the flu virus could also be killed within 15 seconds by ethanol, as found in hand disinfectants.

Since the coronavirus first appeared in China last December, almost 40 million people worldwide have been infected with the pathogen.
