KONTAN.CO.ID – JAKARTA. Fever is often the benchmark for early symptoms of Covid-19. In fact, in some recent cases, this is not always the case.
In Australia, only 20% of new Covid-19 cases show signs of fever. The data was obtained from epidemiological data from the Covid-19 National Incident Space Monitoring Team, which observed cases until August 30.
A spokeswoman for the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services said coughs, sore throats and colds are the most common symptoms of Covid-19 today. However, it turns out that not all patients show symptoms of fever.
“Fever occurs in about 20% of patients, the elderly tend to experience fever less frequently,” said the spokesman as reported by the ABC.
However, when calculating the larger number of cases presented in the report, 5,866 people out of 12,636 total cases or about 46% showed symptoms of fever.
Meanwhile, the second most frequently observed symptom in the data set was coughing. The University of Sydney virologist, Newsome’s team, suspects that the decline in cases of fever may be a product of greater knowledge about Covid-19.
So, the available information is better able to understand the symptoms described by Covid-19.
Other possibilities include higher testing rates, and changes in the demographics of who is infected. “I haven’t seen solid evidence that the virus mutates, and differs significantly from before,” Newsome said.

Fever in Covid-19 patients
Normal human body temperature ranges from 37 degrees Celsius. If it is above that, then one enters the fever area. However, a higher body temperature number does not necessarily indicate the severity of the fever.
One person can have a fever of 38.5 degrees Celsius and be completely unwell, but another person can have a temperature of 41 degrees Celsius but not look sick. Fever is a symptom of a disease, not a disease in itself.
In the most basic terms, it is our body’s inflammatory response to a foreign attack, such as Covid-19. For children under two years of age, fever can also cause seizures that are often worrisome for parents.
According to a recent paper, if someone has a fever with Covid-19, it will likely be the first symptoms that occur.
Researchers from the University of Southern California analyzed more than 55,000 cases and found that Covid-19 is usually characterized by fever first, followed by coughing, nausea and / or vomiting, then diarrhea.
Meanwhile, if you have the flu, chances are that you will cough first, then have a fever. Even so, there was no difference in the sequence of symptoms when they compared mild and serious cases of Covid-19.
