That desperate cry for an ambulance. “Everyone until the end of the street heard it,” says Norina Magnald, a friend of Ter Horst. The woman immediately ran out of the house to see what was going on. “That scream was my first shock. My second shock was that another neighbor was already in the yard and saw that Bert was bleeding on his back. The third shock was that Bert walked into his garden and lay down. But the worst shock was the news that he arrived dead in Turin.”

According to Magnaldi, the death of the Harderwijker is a great loss for the village with no more than 600 inhabitants. The doctor had a holiday home there, where he liked to come. “Bert was a sweet smile for all of us, with his curly white hair.” Ter Horst told her his wish to live permanently in Montaldo. In green. Near the woods. “He really wanted to connect with us.” Although this wish is not recognized by family and friends in the Netherlands.

Last Wednesday, a fight broke out in Ter Horst’s house between a friend and his son who were visiting together. 21-year-old Sacha C. grabbed a kitchen knife and first killed his father Chain-Fa (65), a teacher from Amsterdam. Ter Horst, who attempted to intervene, was also hit and died on the way to hospital.

Village resident Lucia Ferrua suspects that an argument about the impending departure was the reason for the argument. ,,Bert told me on Tuesday that they were about to leave. I haven’t had much time to get to know him well, but he seemed like a very honest person. Very nice.”

Manhunt

C. fled into the woods after his deed. What followed was a manhunt by the Italian police that eventually involved some 200 caribinieri. They had sniffer dogs with them. The Italian Navy helicopter was deployed. They all searched the muddy woods around the tiny hamlet of Montaldo di Mondivi. A warning applied to everyone: the suspected fugitive perpetrator is psychologically confused, and therefore also dangerous. It was, after all, a fighter which C. found on Friday morning. He was sleeping on a bench in front of a mountaintop chapel.
