The sporting goods manufacturer and retailer Decathlon is planning to open a branch in Augsburg. When and where it should open and what is planned.
The French sporting goods manufacturer and retailer Decathlon plans to open its first branch in Augsburg next year. After the company had already opened several branches in Bavarian Swabia in recent years, the branch in Augsburg is in line with the company’s long-term expansion strategy. The new branch is to open on a sales area of 3,500 square meters on Albert Schenavsky Street. The planned opening date is in the summer of 2021. 50 new jobs will be created at the new location in Augsburg, for which employees will be sought locally.
Which is why Decathlon sees Augsburg as a suitable location
“Just like Decathlon, Augsburg is very sporty and diverse, so we have been looking for a suitable location for years,” explains Stefan Kaiser, the responsible expansion manager for southern Germany and Austria. Such a location has now been found with a property on Albert Schenavsky Strasse. “The location is ideal for us because it is very easy to reach, there are plenty of free parking spaces available and there is a strong environment with Kaufland and Bauhaus. We are therefore very much looking forward to our new branch next year. Since we offer all sporting goods for young and old, beginners and professionals, individual and team athletes with 35,000 articles, the range and equipment of the branch will do justice to the sporting variety of Augsburg ”, emphasizes Kaiser.
Many Decathlon locations throughout Bavarian Swabia
The French sporting goods manufacturer and retailer Decathlon has expanded in Bavarian Swabia in recent years. The branch network in Bavaria now comprises a total of 12 branches. The branch in Landshut-Ergolding was one of the first branches in Bavaria. Another branch was opened in 2016. In 2017, the locations in Ingolstadt, Regensburg and Passau opened. Expansion in Munich followed two years later. This year, the branch network grew to include another branch in Erding. However, none of these branches are located in the catchment area of the new branch in Augsburg, which makes it more relevant. “In the medium and long term, we will focus on large-format formats in our expansion in Bavaria. This enables us to implement our corporate philosophy and an intensive shopping experience in stationary retail. However, we will only have one branch in Augsburg in the future, ”emphasizes Kaiser.
