Police imposed Section 144 of the CrPC, which prohibits the assembly of four or more people, in areas affected by violence in north-east Delhi.

Several areas in the northeastern part of Delhi resembled a battlefield, with frenzied protesters setting fire to homes, shops, vehicles and a gas pump and throwing stones.

Police fired tear gas canisters and resorted to lathicharge as clashes broke out between groups protesting and supporting the AAC in Jaffrabad, Maujpur, Chandbagh, Khureji Khas and Bhajanpura. Security personnel conducted flag marches and prohibitive orders were imposed to keep the situation under control.

Ratan Lal, a 42-year-old police officer attached to the office of the Assistant Police Commissioner (ACP) in Gokalpuri, died after suffering injuries following a stoning.

Three other civilians succumbed to their injuries sustained in the clashes, an official from the Delhi government said, adding that 50 people with injuries had come to the GTB hospital for treatment. The toll rose to seven on Tuesday.

At least 11 members of the police force, including Deputy Police Commissioner Shahdara (DCP) Amit Sharma and Gokalpuri ACP Anuj Kumar, were injured while trying to quell the protests. Two CRPF police officers were also injured, sources said.

Government sources said the violence appears to have been “orchestrated” by some for publicity as it comes during Trump’s visit. They said Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik was stationed in the police control room and monitored the situation closely.
