PRIMICIA It has been carrying out campaigns for the early detection of breast cancer since 2016, due to the pandemic this year we had to help from the digital point of view.

For this reason, in the month of the fight against this disease we carried out several live with specialized doctors in the matter to alert citizens.

This week the Mastologist surgeon Assia Navas He spoke with our followers through our Instagram account in which he was able to demolish the most frequent myths about this condition and answer other concerns of those who joined the live.

10 most common myths about breast cancer

-Does the fibrocystic condition evolve into breast cancer?

It is not a disease, as its name says, it is a condition of most women who have fibrocystic tissue, that is, they have fibrosis and inside they have small gaps that are cysts. Of this, there is no study that shows that there is a relationship for the development of breast cancer.

-Does mammography cause breast cancer?

It is one of the main myths, mammography emits very low radiation to develop breast cancer, you would have to have about 50 mammograms in two years to make an incidence.

There are studies in the United States that ensure that the natural background radiation is greater than that of a mammogram.

-Do deodorants or antiperspirants cause cancer?

It is a very common myth, there are specialists who have tested a large sample of the population and there is no relationship between antiperspirants and breast cancer. These studies are published by various institutes in the United States.

Dr. Navas explained that although there are articles that ensure that these products prevent the release of toxins that our body needs to expel, thus causing the disease, this is not scientifically proven.

He explained that toxins leave our body through the kidneys and liver.

“So instead of worrying about deodorants, we have to worry about drinking a lot of water so that toxins are released,” he said.

– Does wearing underwire bras predispose breast cancer?

There are many women who use this type of bra to enhance the bust, give it shape, the problem is that they do not use the correct size, they tend to use smaller sizes to tighten the breasts a bit, this can cause severe and very painful inflammation but not it would turn into breast cancer.

Another problem with underwire bras is that depending on their quality, this metal tends to come out of the fabric, causing very painful wounds to the skin. Nor is it a source for breast cancer.

-Do men suffer from this disease?

It is statistically proven that they are, but they have a very low percentage of suffering from this disease. They only represent 2% of women. In Venezuela that risk is much lower, according to the latest statistics published in 2014 it represented 1% of the cases diagnosed by death.

“If they have relatives with this disease they would also be more likely to develop it, that applies to men and women,” he stressed.

“Besides there are other diseases such as cysts, fibronadenomas, mastitis and gynecomastias, which is the abnormal growth of the breasts in men but is not related to cancer,” he added.

“They have the same symptoms as women but when they have breast cancer it is a little more spectacular because they have little breast tissue and they notice it faster,” he pointed out.

The specialist recommended that before any doubt or abnormality, attend with a mastologist, he is the most suitable to treat that area.

– Is a woman with large breasts more likely to get sick?

The truth is that the probabilities are not in relation to the size of the breast or the density of the breast tissue, when a breast is very dense, which is not the case of women with large breasts, generally those with large breasts have more fat than breast tissue.

Those women with higher density can hide an early cancer and it takes longer to see it. But in general, there is no relationship that the larger the breast size, the greater the willingness to develop breast cancer.

-Does cancer surgery or biopsy cause cancer to spread in the body?

When a patient goes to the mastologist because she has a mass and is told that a suspected biopsy must be done, the first thing that goes through the mind of the patient or what her close circle tells her is do not let them touch her. it’s going to give you cancer.

It turns out that if you have cancer, you already have it, so if you don’t do it, how can we send the treatment without knowing what we’re dealing with.

You really have to take that sample and it has to be done by an expert in the area.

– Does receiving chemotherapy or radiotherapy increase the risk of contracting COVID-19?

If you have a diagnosis of breast cancer and you must receive chemo or radio, you should not postpone it, you must start treatment, even if you become one of the population at risk of getting infected, because then you do not get coronavirus but the cancer continues to advance in your body . It is best not to delay the start of treatment and to have more protection and care not to infect you.

– Does the use of natural medicines eliminate breast cancer?

“I will not speak ill of doctors who use natural medicine because current medicines come from plants, from natural things, but there are several studies that show that chemotherapy drugs used in breast cancer are effective in curing that cancer.

If you decide not to have surgery, not to do chemotherapies, not to do radiotherapies and take natural medicines, you are not going to stop the disease.

It has happened to me that I give the diagnosis to patients and they miss a year, they take natural medicines and they come back worse than when I diagnosed them.

He stressed that there are patients who like to take natural things and “there are drugs that you can use that do not interfere with chemotherapy.”

His recommendation is always to consult with the treating physician because there are medications that cause liver damage or interfere with the treatment process.

-Is palpating a nodule the only symptom of breast cancer?

It is not the only symptom, generally the woman touches a ball on her breast and says it does not hurt, it is hard but it does not move anywhere and look, that is a symptom of breast cancer. Those balls that do not hurt, are hard and do not move could be breast cancer.

Another is that they have a sagging of the breast, retraction of the nipple, abrasions in the breast or redness, orange peel, that the breast suddenly hardens, when you begin to notice a difference in one of them, you should consult your mastologist.

– When to have a mammogram?

Dr. Assia Navas explained that mammograms should be performed once every two years from the age of 35 and after 40 they should be performed once a year.

Regarding those under 35 years of age, he recommended that they do a self-examination and also go to the doctor annually for a breast echo.

Statistically the disease appears in people between 45 to 55 years of age but there are exceptions.

Finally, he left several recommendations for breast care:

  • Keep skin hydrated
  • Drink 8 glasses of water daily
  • Using moisturizer
  • Protect yourself from the sun, use sunscreen and if you go to the beach, it is best to put sunscreen on your breasts as well.
  • Wear the correct bra size.
