Don’t need a cranberry? Just shit here! Riga IFF will be premiered by Eugene Pashkevich’s film What Does Silent Gerda / Day Know

movies What does Pacific Gerda know has already managed to receive nine national film awards Kristaps the Great nominations – including for the best feature film, best feature film directing, best cinematography in a feature film, best artist’s work and best acting in the background. Immediately after the Riga International Film Festival, the work of Jevgenijs Paškēvičs will be shown in cinemas on a larger scale. Before the upcoming event, we met with three award nominees – artist Jurģis Krāsons, cameraman Andrejs Rudzāts and actress Inese Pudža.

We live like a taxi

“If Jeanne chooses you, he trusts you and sees you as a team with one side of the trench in the fight for the realization of ideas in the frame,” the film believes. What does Pacific Gerda know artist Jurģis Krāsons, who first collaborated with Jevgenijs Paškēvičs in 1999, when the director’s previous feature films were made Golf current under the iceberg (2012) first shots with the participation of Russian actor Alexei Serebrjakov, which are the last ones in the film itself. “The old trams were still running, and we didn’t even know how to make a movie ourselves,” recalls Jurģis Krāsons, who had just started his career. Over the years, he has become the most active feature film artist in Latvia.

Before each film by Jevgenijs Pashkevich, there is a lot of preparatory and explanatory work. “The new generation thinks that everything is clear to everyone, but in reality nothing is clear to anyone, because ‘good morning!’ Can also be said in a thousand ways. Which one will we film?” compares Jurģis Krāsons, who from time to time also feels the skin of the director, when creating his own animated short films.

Initially, there was more daydreaming in this film, from which the amount of available funds to be reckoned with in today’s cinema situation has aroused. The artist believes that Latvia should make fewer films, but with a larger budget. “As I have noticed, nothing has become cheaper since my birth in 1970. We live like a taxi, where the price per kilometer only increases and the value of money degrades,” emphasizes Jurģis Krāsons.

For Yevgeny Pashkevich’s film, he and his team have set up the manor as a boarding house in the 1930s and helped film seemingly unimaginable episodes, such as walking on water, taken from the depths by underwater cameras. “From the very beginning of our work, we have agreed that our task is to help the director achieve as much as possible, because otherwise – what’s the point? Go to work, sit on the field and eat lunch? So what do you do in this world? Just exist?” Jurģis Krāsons rhetorically asks about the activities of the art department.

The artist’s recent works range from a black and white Soviet tale to a western that requires a variety of knowledge. “It’s a matter of education and cooperation, when in a certain conditions you and the director and cameraman can come up with a lot and also allow for unexpected turns,” says Jurģis Krāsons and reveals that until the beginning of Jevgenijs Paškēvičs’ Gerda. It has been a mystical image that predicts time, but does not appear anywhere until the episode with the birds had to be filmed. “My assistant calls and asks: you don’t need a crane? Tuck so much here! Eventually she became our Silent Gerda. It is at such moments that there is a feeling that up there, someone is working hard to make it all work,” thinks the artist adds. The camel has also appeared in the feature film of director Laila Pakalniņa Picas (2012).

Jurģis Krāsons is currently working on the completion of his latest animated short film Trubā, polishing the last details. “Right now we’re splitting our hair, but it’s good that it’s time to split it,” laughs Jurģis Krāsons, whose animated short films, like the films What does Pacific Gerda know? The premiere will take place at the Riga International Film Festival. It will be the story of an old plumber who once created a system that absorbs the bitterness, fear, populism and waste that the higher society has washed away. In search of a way out, chaos arises and extinct professions awaken. “It’s a dedication to handicrafts,” the artist reveals.

Billiards on the glass

“I think any cameraman would like to work with Ginseng. He’s one of those directors whose image is not so much a functional pointer as the film itself,” the feature films tell in a conversation with KDi. What does Pacific Gerda know operator Andrejs Rudzāts. Previously, Jevgenijs Paškēvičs has collaborated with operators Gints Bērziņš (Golf current under the iceberg) and Dāvi Sīmanis senior (Human days, 1989), with whose son director Dāvis Sīmanis junior Andrejs Rudzāts has become an inseparable tandem in Latvian cinema. They have just finished the exhibitions of the Riga International Biennale of Contemporary Art RIBOCA everything blooms at once making a documentary.

Andrejs Rudzāts compares Jevgenijs Paškēvičs with a dinosaur in author cinema, which is very little left in the modern world. Yevgeny Pashkevich studied directing at the State Institute of Cinematography in Moscow and made most of the films during the Soviet era. “It might seem that these times of oppression may have left an impression on the director, but what I see is that he has much more freedom than the young directors,” Andrejs Rudzāts emphasizes. Unlike the new ones, Eugene Pashkevich does not worry about the reaction of the audience and creates his own art. He hopes that there will be enough people to find something of his own.

The cameraman tells the movie What does Pacific Gerda know The main character Leonīds Jarmoļņiks has compared Jevgenijs Paškēvičs with Aleksejs Germans, with whom he has had the opportunity to film in the director’s last film It’s hard to be God (2013), which was admitted for twelve years. However, this Germanism is not always convertible in life, although a transparent pool table on a floating pontoon with non-rolling balls before the start of the game is one of the biggest challenges solved by the filming team, which is also witnessed by Leonid Jarmoļnik’s hero. “At first, it was difficult for Lion, because he was looking for an explanation for his character’s actions, but nothing is rationally understood in Jeanne’s film. It is the handwriting of his director that he seems to put everything in one container, shake it and watch what comes out of it,” .

On the other hand, the cameraman says that the creative group has spent an unusually long time driving and viewing various filming objects. “At one point, I realized that for Žen, it was a kind of thought process about the next film,” explains Andrejs Rudzāts. During this time, the director tends to cling to certain details that he would like to see in his work, and – more importantly – it is in these conversations about them that the feelings of all parties involved about what this film should look like synchronize.

Movies What does Pacific Gerda know The boarding house is located in different places on different sides of Latvia. In Cesvaine Castle, mainly interiors have been filmed, on the Dundaga side – mostly exteriors.

“When a director manages to put different details together, he rejoices like a child,” says the cameraman, adding that similarly, Jevgenijs Paškēvičs also chooses a filming group – as a kind of combine that will perform a certain processing cycle – but also leaves room for improvisation. , whose director knows superclearly, but there are things he allows himself to see the vision offered by others, only it has to be very definite.

“You must not come to him and say – we can so and we can in this – because such a conversation will not make sense. You must not come to him and say – let’s paint blue or green – because he will answer that yellow! That way he intuitively or deliberately breaks off some formalistic excitement, “thinks Andrejs Rudzāts. The most exciting thing about working with Jevgenija Pashkevich is that each episode has its own atmosphere. “We have to feel the heat!” this has been the general rule, but everything else has evolved in the work process.

Seventeen moments

This year in the combined category The best acting in the role of the background to the prize Kristaps the Great also claims Inese Pudža alongside her screen partner Gatis Gags. In the movie What does Pacific Gerda know Inese Puja plays the maid Mary. The plot line of this heroine begins with a bright episode, in which she takes Mrs. Emma’s nail polish without permission and later, with real regret, confesses to this pastor Gundars Āboliņš during the confession.

“Jevgenijs Paškēvičs had come to the Valmiera Theater during the selection of actors and came to our performance Miss Julia“The beginning of the collaboration is being restored by an actress. In the production created by director Vladislav Nastavšev, she played the title role and came into the sight of Jevgenijs Paškēvičs. , an unobtrusive and smart operator both technically and in terms of the attitude of the actor, “says the actress.

Prior to the role of the maid Mary, she has been seen in small episodes in the film work of director Juris Kursieš. Modris (2014) and in the feature film Copper Brasla A grandfather who is more dangerous than a computer (2017). In a conversation with KDi, Inese Pudža emphasizes that participation in the roles of the background is a complicated process. “I’m always tense and can’t do as much as I’d like, because I really feel the environment – the boiler where the filmmaking team is already boiling – and you’ve joined from the outside. It needs the ability to adapt extremely quickly. Maybe it will come with time, but maybe you just don’t have to do it, you don’t have to film, “the actress thinks.

Her portrayed heroine along with other movies What does Pacific Gerda know images representing different characters and interests are staying in a secluded boarding house, fleeing the information and technological pressures of the 21st century. As in the game of somnambulous chess, here each figure has its own incomprehensible trajectory, it is stated in the film’s application for the festival. Riga IFF Homepage. “I go with the directors and trust them completely. If I feel that there are places where I can express my thoughts or they ask for them, I will say. If not – no. In this case, Yevgeny Pashkevich knew for exactly a millisecond and a millimeter how exactly I you have to talk and act in front of the camera, “reveals Inese Pudža. This knowledge has led to one episode that has been recorded with seventeen duplicates. It has been an emotionally difficult experience she would never want to have in her work again.

“I’m ready to ‘strangle’ this kind of director when he honestly admits that he can’t find the right way to create a particular episode or scene, because we are on the same step and we can try to find a solution together, but in this case it was something. another, “emphasizes the actress and honestly admits that she feels better on the stage of the theater than in the cinema, from which she returns from time to time.

Already after the movie What does Pacific Gerda know Inese Pudža has added a historical feature film by director Gats Šmītis to the list of admissions 1906 (2019), in which the decadent poet Violet was played. In turn, exactly after two weeks in the app Shortcut Films the audience will receive the psychological thriller of the new director Vlad Kovalev, TV series Missing, in which Inese Pudža will play one of the roles alongside other well-known Latvian actors.
