The Escazú Now Young group has gathered 6,650 signatures from the population in order to urge the Congress of the Republic to ratify bill No. 4645/2019-PE on the Escazú Agreement.
The alliance that brings together 38 youth organizations that carry out actions in defense of the environment and the fight against climate change collected the signatures through the Change.org portal.
“For young people, the Escazú Agreement is an opportunity for the authorities to demonstrate their commitment to a sustainable development model, consolidate our democracy and contribute to the reduction of socio-environmental conflicts”, According to Kiara Ordóñez, representative of the aforementioned organization.
Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee has held various sessions with specialists in favor and against to discuss the agreement. However, the vote to approve the ratification of the bill has yet to take place.
For the youth union, the agreement will make it easier for the State to attend to public health issues such as the health crisis linked to the COVID-19.
Likewise, “It will allow the protection of human rights defenders in environmental matters, among which are indigenous leaders, youth activists and other essential social actors for the conservation of biodiversity in our territory.“Said Ordoñez.
