Effects of Drinking Coffee Every Day for Heart Health

KOMPAS.com – Three recent studies found that drinking coffee every day is very beneficial for heart health.

This is the largest study to look at coffee’s potential role in heart disease and death Prevention.

According to researchers, drinking 2-3 cups of coffee per day is associated with a lower risk of heart disease and dangerous heart rhythms.

In addition, drinking coffee can also increase longevity.

The data is drawn from the UK BioBank, a large-scale health information database covering more than half a million people over at least a 10-year period.

The team then compared how much coffee people drank, ranging from one cup to more than six cups a day, and its relationship to heart rhythm problems, cardiovascular disease, total and heart-related mortality.

It’s important to note, the study did not adjust for dietary factors that may also play a role in heart health or if participants drank their coffee with cream or added sugar.

First study

In the first study, researchers examined data from 382,535 participants with no known heart disease.

The average age of the participants was 57 years and the study featured an even number of men and women.

The study found that two to three cups of coffee a day was associated with the greatest benefit, with about a 10 to 15 percent lower risk of coronary heart disease, heart failure, heart rhythm problems, or death from any reason.

Those who drank one cup of coffee a day had the lowest risk of stroke or heart-related death.

Second study

The second study involved 34,279 people who already had some form of cardiovascular disease.

This determined that those who drank two to three cups of coffee per day had a lower chance of dying compared to those who did not drink coffee.

Additionally, the researchers found that any amount of coffee was associated with a lower risk of heart rhythm problems.

In fact, of the 24,111 people in the study who had an irregular heartbeat, drinking coffee lowered their risk of death.

Third study

In a third study, researchers determined whether the type of coffee mattered.

The scientists compared the data of those who drank instant coffee with ground coffee and caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee to see the effect on the heart.

Again, the researchers found that two to three cups of coffee were sweet spot which was associated with a lower risk of arrhythmias, blockages in the heart arteries, stroke, or heart failure in ground coffee and instant coffee.

Decaffeinated coffee had no impact on irregular heartbeats but reduced cardiovascular disease, with the exception of heart failure.

What heart patients need to know

Quoted from CNN, Head of Clinical Electrophysiology Research at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute and senior author of the study Peter M Kistler said the study did not establish a causal relationship between coffee drinking and health conditions.

“But there are various mechanisms by which coffee can reduce mortality and have a beneficial effect on cardiovascular disease,” Kistler said.

However, it is not clear whether caffeine is responsible for the health benefits of coffee. Because, there are many biologically active compounds in coffee in particular that can play a role in that.

These compounds can help reduce inflammation, inhibit fat absorption in the gut, block receptors involved with abnormal heart rhythms, and reduce oxidative stress.

Oxidative stress is an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in the body.
