Elisabeth Moss on the new series: – Incredibly smart

Elisabeth Moss was a safe choice for critically acclaimed series, such as “Mad Men,” “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Top of The Lake,” for talk show films such as “The Square” and “The French Dispatch.”

Now it’s important again, in a series that is about very scary stuff.

– But we don’t show it graphically, it’s not our focus, Moss tells TT from New York.

The book “The Shining Girls”, written by South African Lauren Beukes, is a thriller and science fiction in one package. It takes us to Chicago when the calendar shows depression and the 30s, where Harper Curtis rootless tramp finds a hole in time. This allows him to travel back and forth in time, and as a serial killer he hunts for “bright girls” – and kills them.

In the series, we see that a woman named Kirby Mazrachi, who lives in our time, survives the ravages of Curtis. He discovered similarities between what happened to him and the damage to a body found in a train tunnel.

A colleague who works for the same newspaper as Mazrachi is a great help when he begins to unwind.

Unlike everything else

When Moss, one of the most sought-after actors in the world, was offered the role, he read the script before reading the book.

– It’s always a good thing to do, it gives me the opportunity to experience the story as the audience will experience it. Because it is inevitable: Things in the book will change in the movie script.

– I think the story is incredibly clever, a story that has both thriller and science fiction, and this is not like anything else I’ve come in contact with before, he says.

The series has many bloody murders, but the bloody details spared TV viewers from watching. A conscious choice that too, Elisabeth Moss emphasizes.

– It’s not the focus here, it’s not the story we want to tell, Moss explains, and he explains:

– There was nothing to suggest that we needed to show explicit scenes of violence, because this is about a woman who finds her own voice. And often it is the case that what you do not see, it just appears even more scary in the imagination.

The actor wins

Elisabeth Moss is often on the production team for the projects she is involved in, and this applies to both “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “The Shining Girls”.

– If the actor and the producer have different wills, then the actor has this argument. He is definitely tougher and more powerful, says Moss with a twinkle in his eye. He adds:

– Besides, I have the chance to work with a fantastic gang. We work together, and being able to work well together is power.

The next season of “The Handmaid’s Tale” is now being recorded, and then it’s obviously asking: When will it hit the screens?

– I know, but I will not tell you more, the actor replied with a laugh.

Moss also kept secrets about other things, such as belonging to the Church of Scientology. He recently touched on this in a great interview with The New Yorker. Here he says, among other things, about why he rarely speaks publicly about this aspect of his life:

– With friends, I’m like an open book about it. But I don’t want people to be distracted by me. I want them to see the character.
