Tatar, who competed for the presidency with the former head of Northern Cyprus, Mustafa Akindhi, won 51.73% of the vote.
In the first round of elections on October 11, 72-year-old Akindži won 29.8% of the vote, while 60-year-old Tatar won 32.3% of the vote.
Akindji is in favor of the reunification of Cyprus, but Tatar, whose election was supported by Turkish President Regepi Taipa Erdogan, is in favor of a separate independent state.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops occupied the northern third of the island in response to a coup backed by the then Athens military junta, which aimed to unite the island with Greece.
At present, there is still a Turkish military contingent of around 35,000 men in Northern Cyprus, and the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic, recognized by Ankara alone, is in fact entirely dependent on Turkish economic support.
The ongoing peace talks between the Turkish and Greek-administered parts of the island, which took place through the United Nations, came to a standstill in 2017, and no progress has been made since then.
