Espen Andersen Bråthen is charged with the murders at Kongsberg

The case is being updated.

Espen Andersen Bråthen is accused of killing five people on Wednesday night, less than a kilometer from his childhood home in Kongsberg, writes Aftenposten.

According to the police, he has acknowledged the circumstances. Close to his own home, where he has lived for the past two years, he is said to have entered a Coop Extra store on the West Side of Kongsberg.

Police attorney Ann Iren Svane Mathiassen tells Aftenposten that the dead were found inside a residential building. – We assume that he took himself in, because it was found dead in a home, she says.

Bråthen is a Danish citizen, but has lived in Kongsberg for almost his entire adult life.

The police were tipped off and had contact with the perpetrator several times.

Left revolver and was banned from visiting

The police have confirmed that they knew the perpetrator from before.

On May 29 last year, he behaved threateningly towards his own parents. He entered their house and refused to leave it. He is said to have made threats and left a revolver on the sofa before he left.

It appears from a judgment from Kongsberg and Eiker District Court on 23 July last year.

Bråthen was banned from visiting by the police and was not allowed to have any contact with his parents for six months.

A little later in the summer, a court hearing was held where Bråthen himself did not show up. The court supported the police’s restraining order.

In 2012, he was sentenced to 60 days probation for burglary and possession and use of hashish. According to the verdict, he has been convicted of similar matters before, but it is further back in time.

Aftenposten has been in contact with defender Fredrik Neumann. He does not want to confirm the identity or counter information about the actions and background of Bråthen.

Notified the police in 2017

Police confirmed on Thursday that Bråthen had converted to Islam.

Aftenposten has gained access to videos from a closed Facebook profile, where Bråthen appeared under a different name.

In the videos, which are also said to have been forwarded as a tip of concern to the police in December 2017, Bråthen looks into the camera. Slowly he says:

“Hi. I’m a messenger. I’m coming with a warning. Is this really what you want? And for everyone who wants to make up for themselves, then the time has come. Testify that I am a Muslim. “

According to a screenshot of an e-mail Aftenposten has seen, the police have been tipped off about these videos. The tipper wrote the following to a police attorney:

“I have talked to several friends / acquaintances and we are several who are very worried / frightened about these videos and hope that he gets help soon”.

Police have not confirmed that they received the tip.

The same tipper claims to Aftenposten that he was a close friend of Bråthen at times. The last time he met him was in 2017.

Trained with assault weapons in the garden

According to neighbors on Kongsberg, the police have been to Bråthen’s home several times. Last summer, they moved out with several patrols. On one occasion, they allegedly threatened to enter the home, before Bråthen surrendered.

Pictures and messages the neighbor has sent to others in a chat, which Aftenposten has seen, show police with a helmet in Bråthen’s garden.

The neighbor saw several times that Bråthen trained martial arts with assault weapons in the garden. In the chat messages, the assault weapons are referred to as “a club or baton”. He describes the martial arts training as a “brutal fighting style” and felt the need to stay away from Bråthen.

This training and gut feeling also mentions the neighbor in conversations with others.
