KIEV, Ukraine – The European Union urges Ukraine to strengthen its anti-corruption efforts.
In a report released Friday, the EU said there had been few convictions in high-level corruption cases in the country.
However, Ukraine has taken steps to reform its judicial system.
The EU stressed that the establishment of a specialized anti-corruption court was crucial and that the Ukrainian authorities should properly investigate and punish attacks against civil society activists.
EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Johannes Hahn, on a visit to Kiev to deliver the report to Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman, said it was "crucial to maintain the reform and make these changes irreversible "in the run-up to the presidential and parliamentary elections in March 2019.
Hahn stressed that "there can be no setback on issues such as anti-corruption efforts".
