Eurelius, walking the street in red: celebrating 50 years, the legend will not forget Sabo’s gift, Shar and Duncan’s sad lesson.

Although he ended his basketball career in 2009, basketball fans still remember the kicks of the 216 cm long-armed basketball player named “Stepu”.

In a short conversation, E. Žukauskas recalled impressive victories, fun adventures, the most memorable stages of his basketball career and shared his thoughts on his personal life and current activities.

– Eurelius, you are 50 years old today. Do you get the idea that half a century has already passed?

– To be honest, I really don’t feel like I’m 50 years old. Maybe people over 35 years old. I don’t understand if basketball works like that here, that we, basketball players, stay in the prime of our lives for a long time and don’t change too much in appearance. I don’t know why you basketball players are so cute? (smile – post author).

– How will you celebrate this anniversary?

– I don’t emphasize my birthday too much, but I will celebrate my 50th birthday. I invited my friends, we will play tennis, there will be a DJ and Georgian food. I want to celebrate a real birthday, not wait for the weekend. The actual birthday should be celebrated, not sometime after a few days.

Shar scans even at night

– Have you ever wondered and tried to count how many different victories you have celebrated during your life. After all, you wore the shirt of the Lithuanian national team for almost a decade (from 1995 to 2004) and you can boast of a prestigious collection of medals – you won Olympic bronze in 1996 in Atlanta and 2000 in Sydney, and in 2003. In Stockholm, you also became the European champion, and where else is the 1999 Euroleague winner’s trophy and other victories in club basketball.

– When you turn the time back, you realize that there were really many positive times.

In the beginning, there was the time of Arvydas Sabonis, we were studying. And since the Sydney Games, our era had already begun, we smelled blood. When Šarūnas Jasikevičius scored a last shot against the Dream Team, our unity increased even more.

In 2003, we became European champions, and in 2004, we already held our own at the Athens Olympics. Well, don’t get me wrong, we didn’t “get up”, but we trust each other, we felt the rhythm and our strength.

And it did not happen as Mindaugas Lekerauskas said: “I will replace Sabonis, and who will replace me?” (Laughs. Post author.). We also replaced M. Lekerauskas and all other famous Lithuanian basketball players and we really did not make any shame.

The member of the Lithuanian national team and I used to spend a lot of time together: we went to the city to eat, we established a relationship. We used to talk: you did it wrong, you did it right. We were like one point, like one family.

Now maybe basketball players communicate more on social media, and we used to go everywhere together. We would clap our hands and say, “We have to win.”
Our social networks didn’t bother us much back then, because they simply didn’t exist anymore. We called each other and that was it. We didn’t feel a lot of pressure. Maybe it was positive.

In general, I remember very well one of the first training camps of my Lithuanian national team in Druskininkai.

Arvydas Sabonis, Žydrūnas Ilgauskas, Raimondas Leikus, Virginijus Praškevičius and Singaras Tribė arrived.

It was a very positive action. Then Sab did whatever he wanted under the basket, we did not move with him.

So the great desire to win, even during training, the players of the national team did not abandon the fight for every ball, for every centimeter of the field, even in various matches – Sprint or somewhere, they showed character, combativeness. and emphasize the need to win everywhere.

– When in Sweden in 2003 you became the European champion with the Lithuanian national team, we already heard rumors that he was not in the national team coach then Antanas Sireikas, but the team led by Šarūnas Jasikevičius. Is there any truth?

– Shar was still in charge. He could also handle Jonas Kazlauskas, but he was too young (laughs).

Already in those days, he used to watch videos of matches all the time, even at night, and analyze them.
