In a serious traffic accident on the Scheldelaan, in the Antwerp port area, a 34-year-old man died on Friday morning. A van with four occupants collided with a truck from the other direction of travel.
The accident happened a little after 6:30 am. A van with several employees of the same company was driving in the direction of BASF, when a truck from the other direction of travel deviated from the lane for an as yet unclear reason.
The driver of the van could no longer avoid a collision. The van ended up on its side in the canal. One of the occupants, a 34-year-old man of Polish descent, died. The three other men were seriously injured.
The four people, Polish scaffolders, were on their way to the BASF sites. BASF’s company fire brigade and medical services were therefore the first to arrive. A little later they received assistance from the Fire Service Zone Antwerp and several ambulances and mosquito teams. The victims had to be freed from the battered vehicle.
The photogrammetry service came on site to map out the accident. During the handling of the accident, the roadway was completely blocked until 11 am.
