NEW DELHI – Police say a fire in an 18-storey building in India's financial capital, Mumbai, killed a 70-year-old woman and killed 19 others.
The police control room reported that nearly 100 people had been evacuated from the building, while the fire of an electrical conduit on the third floor had spread early Sunday.
According to the Press Trust of India news agency, 77 people who inhaled smoke were treated in a hospital and allowed to return home.
Two of the 19 hospitalized were in critical condition, the police said.
Four fire engines extinguished the fire in two hours.
Fires are common in India, where builders and residents often flout construction laws and safety standards. Last December, a fire at a restaurant in Mumbai killed 15 people late at night.
