Coca-Cola drinkers will have one chance to revive one of the company's darker chapters as New Coke makes a return under partnership with the Netflix drama "Stranger Things," the companies announced Tuesday.
Season 3 of the show will take place in the summer of 1985, when Coca-Cola changed its formula to Coke. New Coke was always considered one of the biggest marketing rounds and the new version fell after 79 days, although the first Coca-Cola was sold.
"The 1985 summer changed everything for us when New Coke was introduced, which could also be said to be one of the biggest environments in the year," said Oana Vlad, director of Coca-Cola trademark, Coca-Cola North America.
The workers had to retrieve the new coke recipe from the safe partnership for the "Stranger Things" partnership.
"All he said, everything took about six months and the best secret was," said Peter Shoemaker, director of commercialization in the sparkling category.
The workers were forced to recreate the logo and the red coke was different for the cans from more than 30 years ago.
“The partnership with Coke gives Netflix the opportunity to reach a huge audience through one of the world's most recognized brands in a truly authentic way,” said Netflix Head of Global Partner Marketing, Barry Smyth.
Starting Thursday, Coca-Cola will release a limited number of cans of New Coke as part of the "Stranger Things" package. Stranger Things-up-up vending machine will also be inspired in selected cities this summer to let off New Coke free cans for a limited time.
