Mattia Binotto preferred to temper expectations in the face of the evolved Ferrari engine which will be used in 2021. After a catastrophic performance in 2020 on this side, the Scuderia is expected at the turn, but its director tempers expectations.
“Right now we don’t have the best engine, but next year we can have an entirely new one” said Binotto, who admits that time limitations on the test bench force the Scuderia to be “creative”.
Ferrari made great strides in 2019 with an engine that was ultimately deemed to be on a gray area of regulation and subsequently banned. Paradoxically, it was the good performance of the Italian powertrain in 2019 that forced Mercedes to redouble work and give the German camp the advantage in terms of power.
“Can we reach Mercedes? Maybe that’s too much to ask because it would involve gaining 40 to 50 horsepower. But to be at Honda and Renault level today would be a big step forward.”
“We have to keep in mind that only one engine specification will be allowed over the entire 2021 season, with the exception of a few minor details. There will be no room for error.”
