The German Social Democrat Minister for Family Affairs, Franciska Gifai, has resigned. The reason for the dissolution is the accusation that her 2010 doctoral dissertation is plagiarism.
The politician emphasized in a special statement that she had written the dissertation based on her knowledge and beliefs. However, she admitted that she had made mistakes and expressed her readiness to give up her degree if the Free University of Berlin decides to do so after an investigation. At the same time, Gifaya has not given up on the idea of being a Social Democrat candidate for mayor in the capital, Berlin, in the upcoming elections in September.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has resigned, but has paid tribute to the Minister and regrets this decision. The media, on the other hand, recalls that plagiarism has been accused of politicians since 2019, when the university began examining its work on European politics.
Independent experts found that almost a fifth of the pages contained signs of plagiarism, citations without references and direct borrowings from other works.
