Military personnel seized about 23,000 plants, totaling 14 tons.
The GNR of Santarém, through the Territorial Port of Almeirim, seized this Monday 23 thousand cannabis plants, in what could be the biggest seizure ever made in Portugal and one of the largest in Europe.
The seizure took place as part of an investigation, which lasted a month, for extortion.
In a statement, the Santarém Territorial Command reported that the suspects were “linked to other illegal actions, such as the planting, cultivation and sale of cannabis plants”.
A 35-year-old man was arrested and another 50-year-old man was accused on September 1.
In the course of the police investigations, two search and seizure warrants were carried out in two companies holding agricultural land and greenhouses.
In addition to the cannabis plants, 17 cannabis bags weighing 91 kilograms, eight containers with growing material and fertilizers, two rolls of plastic net for drying plants, a mobile phone, a laptop computer, a mechanical atomizer to apply products with pharmaceutical purpose, an irrigation set and a fertilizer spreader.
