ATHENS, Greece – The Greek Defense Minister has appealed to his countrymen torn apart by austerity to raise funds for the construction of new warships.
Panos Kammenos says he will open a bank account on Jan. 1, where the public will be able to donate "for new frigates and a flagship."
He appealed to the rich arms industry of Greece, as well as to ordinary Greeks.
"I will be the first to deposit my salary in this effort," he said, addressing the Navy personnel on the occasion of the feast of St. Nicholas, patron of the Navy and Greek sailors.
Kammenos said that 2019 would see a general fleet modernization campaign, which faces stiff competition from neighboring Turkey, allied with NATO and historical regional rival.
