Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff have conquered six ‘doubles’ together, six times the constructors ‘title and the world drivers’ title in the same year since crossing their path in 2013. But the close bond between the Brit and the Austrian only came about after the sudden departure of Nico Rosberg in 2016. “We agreed to play open cards with each other from now on.”
When Toto Wolff arrived at Mercedes in January 2013, he didn’t have an immediate affinity with Hamilton. He was much closer to Niki Lauda, the driving force behind Hamilton’s arrival at Mercedes. Wolff and Hamilton only really found each other when Nico Rosberg left Mercedes at the end of 2016. Until then, the difficult cohabitation between Rosberg and Hamilton had not only destroyed the friendship between the two drivers, it also created tension between Lewis and his team boss.
Sometimes they were even on a collision course, and it was Lauda who took on the role of catalyst. Toto Wolff agreed when talking about his close relationship with Hamilton earlier this season. “I needed time with Lewis. But if I look back on it now, that untenable tension in which the 2016 season ended actually laid the breeding ground for our relationship. From that moment on, Lewis and I grew closer together. ”
Toto Wolff saw that he had to intervene and had a long talk with Hamilton. It was an important moment for both: what had until then been a purely professional relationship became personal. “We then agreed to play open cards with each other from now on,” Wolff recently said.
