Synopsis:
The disfigured bell-ringer of Notre Dame, Quasimodo, wishes to be with other people but was raised in solitude. His chance encounter with the gypsy Esmerelda changes his life and must save her from the clutches of the evil Frollo.

The plot of the hunchback of Notre Dame
A group of Romans sneaks into Paris in 1482 and an ambush is set up by Judge Claude Frollo who, on the steps of Notre Dame Cathedral, kills one of the women and tries to kill his deformed child. An archdeacon enters, saving the boy and forcing Frollo to take care of the boy to atone for his sin. The boy’s name is Quasimodo and he grew up in the cathedral. Quasimodo grows up to be a kind but lonely boy whose only friends are three stone gargoyles. A group of gypsies return to Paris and among them to the beautiful Esmerelda. She and Quasimodo meet by chance and develop a friendship, but also attracts the attention of the evil Frollo, who wants it for himself. One of Frollo’s henchmen tries to arrest Esmerelda for witchcraft but when he enters Notre Dame he cannot arrest her. It is then confined to the cathedral. Quasimodo helps Esmerelda to escape from the cathedral because he is kind to him; this angers Frollo looking for her, burning Parisian houses while looking for the gypsy. The gargoyles try to convince Quasimodo to tell Esmerelda how he feels about him, but he doesn’t. When Frollo returns to the cathedral, he learns that Quasimodo helps Esmerelda to escape, and causes Quadimodo to reveal where the other gypsies are hiding. He captures the gypsies and Esmerelda and is ready to have her burned at the stake because he has rejected him. Phoebus and Quasimodo gather the Parisians to oppose Frollo, and in a clash with Notre Dame, Frollo and Quasimodo both fall on the street below. Phoebus saves Quasimodo, who comes to realize that Phoebus and Esmerelda are in love. He gives them his blessing and helps him become part of the Parisian society.

Tom Hulce as Quasimodo
Quasimodo is the deformed department of Frollo that rings the bells of the Notre Dame Cathedral. He falls in love with Esmerelda and wishes to be accepted by society. Tom Hulce is an award-winning actor famous for playing Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in the 1984 film Amadeus. This role led to an Oscar nomination in 1984. He has won four awards including an Emmy for his part in The Heidi Chronicles.
Kevin Kline as Phoebus
Phoebus’ character was changed from Hugo’s original to be more heroic as part of the Disney movie. Save Quasimodo’s life and fall in love with Esmerelda. Kevin Kline is an Oscar-winning actor and director, famous for his roles in A Fish Called Wanda, Wild Wild West and In & Out. He also starred in the live-action version of Beauty and the Beast, released by Disney in 2017, and sang the film’s soundtrack.

Hugo is a gargoyle who befriends Quasimodo at Notre Dame. Jason Alexander is an award-winning actor, producer and director, best known as George in the comic series Seinfeld. Tony Jay as Frollo
Frollo kills Quasimodo’s mother and tries to kill him before being forced to take care of the baby. He is an evil man. Actor Tony Jay is famous for his roles in Time Bandit and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. He also starred in the TV series Beauty and the Beast.
Charles Kimbrough as Victor
Victor is one of Quasimodo’s gargoyle friends who lives in Notre Dame. Veteran actor Charles Kimbrough is best known for his portrayal of the news anchor Jim Dial on Murphy Brown in the 1980s. Mary Wickes as Laverne
Laverne is Quasimodo’s third gargoyle friend; is his confidante and offers him advice. Actress Mary Wickes is a Hollywood veteran who has appeared in 144 films throughout her career. He would have voiced Laverne for The Hunchback of Notre Dame, but died before the film was released. In addition to Hunchback, she is famous for her roles in both Sister Act films with Whoopi Goldberg and for playing Emma in White Christmas with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye.

The well-known studio musicians Stephen Schwartz and Alan Menken were chosen to create the music for The Hunchback of Notre Dame; the duo had previously worked together with Pocahontas. They would have created seven songs along with the film’s soundtrack. The Someday song was originally developed to be sung in the cathedral, but Disney executives decided to sing a more religious melody inside the church, leaving Someday as a song that flows under the credits. 1. Cyndi Lauper ax from the hunchback
Despite being one of the first actors hired for the project, Cyndi Lauper was released from his contract. Disney executives decided to go in a different way with the gargoyles, which was where Lauper had been chosen, and they thought his voice was “too young” for the part.
2. Jason Alexander criticizes Disney
Although he says that being chosen as Victor in Hunchback made a “lifelong dream” of being chosen for a Disney movie, actor Jason Alexander also criticized the film. He said it wouldn’t bring his four-year-old to see the movie because some of the themes were too adult for younger viewers.
3. The Australian “hunchback” cuts Hellfire
For the original debut of the film in Australia, the last third of the Hellfire scene, in which Frollo burns Paris, has been cut.
