Hurricane Hilary weakens as it advances towards Mexico – Diario La Página

Hurricane Hilary weakened this Saturday (08.19.2023) to category three and maintains its trajectory through the Pacific of Mexico, towards the Baja California peninsula, where it is expected to make landfall in some places and then enter California, United States, Update the National Meteorological Service (SMN). The Mexican meteorological authorities forecast heavy rains with the risk of flooding in a large part of the country and asked the population to take extreme precautions in the face of high waves and the risk of overflowing rivers and streams.

Around 18:00 GMT, the hurricane presented maximum sustained winds of 185 km/h and was located 570 km from Punta Eugenia, a town in the center of the Baja California peninsula, reported the National Hurricane Center (NHC). The speed of its winds makes it a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Despite being downgraded from category 4, it is feared that the hurricane will cause heavy rains and flooding with significant risks for the population.

“Weakening is expected to begin this Saturday, but Hilary will still be a hurricane when it approaches the west coast of Baja California tonight and Sunday morning,” the agency added. The meteorological phenomenon will cause “heavy” rains in Baja California, Baja California Sur, Sonora and Sinaloa, as well as “very heavy” rains in Aguascalientes, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Nayarit and Zacatecas, according to the forecast for this Saturday. Likewise, there will be “strong” rainfall in Chihuahua and Durango, according to the Mexican SMN forecast.

Hilary could make landfall as a category 1 hurricane on Sunday in Baja California, according to the map projected by the SMN, while on Monday it would enter US territory as a tropical storm. Given the imminent landfall of Hurricane Hilary, the Baja California authorities declared a state of pre-alert, due to the magnitude with which it is expected to reach this area.

The governor of the state, Marina del Pilar Avila Olmeda, highlighted in a conference with the media that it is likely that when the hurricane reaches Baja California, “the emergency code will turn red, which means that importance and seriousness of life.
