Valérie Glatigny, Minister of Sports in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, today unveiled the list of 79 high-level athletes who will benefit from a contract for the year 2021. This is 7 athletes more than in 2020.
The health crisis has been particularly impacted on the world of sport. An almost blank year for many athletes, which prompted the Minister of Sports in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, Valérie Glatigny, to renew all of the 2020 contracts. The number of athletes has even increased this year, from 70 to 79. These contracts are all for a period of one year, renewable.
” The year 2020 has been very difficult for our athletes, who have very often seen their goals postponed. It was essential for me to continue to support them, so that they can calmly prepare for the upcoming deadlines in 2021 “, declares Minister Glatigny.
Among the athletes we find, among others, the brothers Borlée, Nafi Thiam, Charline Van Snick, Alexandra Tondeur, John John Dohmen, Tom Boon, Jonas Gerkens or Maxime Gentges. The full list of the 2021 cast can be found here.
As a reminder, in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, nearly 2,000 athletes have a status (high-level athlete, international sports hope, young talent or training partner) which offers them, in addition to official recognition, a range of services in depending on their level: access to the sports performance assistance center – CAPS -, to subsidies linked to their federation’s program plan, to school facilities or to the 10 permanent physical preparation centers.
” For many years, the results of our sports elites have been impressive “, concludes Valérie Glatigny. ” I am delighted that the Wallonia-Brussels Federation is contributing, through these contracts and the entire high-level sport assistance system, to these performances. “
