iPhone 12: New Features, 5G, Pricing, and More

Apple has finally unveiled its latest phone: the iPhone 12! This is the new standard model with 5G and it succeeds the iPhone 11. Read on for more information about the iPhone 12, such as the innovations, specifications, prices and more!

Four iPhone 12 models

There is not one iPhone 12 – there are no fewer than four different models. There are two basic versions: the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 and the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini. We will discuss these in this article. These two iPhones are the same in everything – only the size is different. In addition, there are two more advanced Pro models. You can read more about this in the file on the iPhone 12 Pro (Max).

There are many reasons to be enthusiastic about the successor to the iPhone 11. The phone supports 5G, has a beautiful new design and has an OLED screen instead of LCD. This makes Apple’s new standard a big leap forward. So big, in fact, that the new iPhones are very little inferior to its more expensive Pro brothers.

New design

Apple has given the design of the iPhone a refresh. For example, the sides have become completely flat, instead of rounded. This makes the design a bit more like that of the iPad Pro and iPad Air – or the iPhone 4 from years ago.

The device is also equipped with an OLED panel, which has been present for a while on the more luxurious iPhone models. This makes the screen look even more beautiful, with better colors and higher contrasts. Another advantage of OLED is that pixels in the color black can be switched off, so that the iPhone uses less energy.

Partly thanks to OLED technology, Apple has managed to make the edges around the screen smaller. It gives the iPhone a more chic look, similar to the Pro. Another new feature is that the screen is protected by the so-called Ceramic Shield. According to Apple, the material is stronger than any other smartphone glass and makes the drop resistance four times higher.

The basic model, like its predecessor, has a 6.1-inch screen. Yet it is slightly more compact than the iPhone 11, because Apple has made the edges around the screen slightly thinner. The iPhone is 11 percent thinner, 15 percent smaller, and 16 percent lighter.

In addition, there is for the first time a mini version, which has a display of 5.4 inches. It is the smallest iPhone that Apple currently offers – so it is also smaller than the iPhone SE 2020. It has a smaller screen of 4.7 inches, but is still larger due to the wider bezels and home button.

Camera system

The iPhone 12 has three 12-megapixel cameras (two at the back, one at the front), just like last year. On the back it is all about the wide angle and ultra wide angle. The wide-angle lens now has a wider aperture of f / 1.6. As a result, 27 percent more light falls on the lens, and this makes photos taken in low light look better.

Again, there is also the Night mode, with which you can take beautiful photos in low light. With the new iPhone, this feature can not only be used with the wide-angle lens, but the ultra-wide-angle lens and selfie camera can also handle it. Nice for your nightly selfies.

The iPhone’s HDR function has been improved. Apple calls it ‘Smart HDR 3’ and it uses new software to adjust the white balance, contrast, texture and saturation of a photo. Deep Fusion – a technique that provides photos with more detail and less noise – is now available on all cameras, just like the night mode.

Furthermore, filming has become a lot better. What is new is that you can record in Dolby Vision. The image technology ensures higher brightness, better contrast and more accurate colors. You can also make time-lapse videos for the first time with the night mode and there is an improved video image stabilization.

Powerful chip and 5G

The iPhone 12 is powered by the new A14 Bionic chip (which is also included in the more luxurious Pro models). It is the first smartphone chip built with the 5-nanometer process. The processor has a 16-core Neural Engine and can perform 11 trillion operations per second: 80 percent more than before.

With the A14, the device has a chip that is 50 percent faster than the processors in the leading Android smartphones, according to Apple. In addition, the processor has become more efficient. Still, the battery life has hardly improved – probably because the battery has become smaller.

The iPhone 12 is the first iPhone to support 5G. Unfortunately, the device has no millimeter wave (mmWave) – the fastest form of 5G. It is only available with the American version. The model we get here only connects to lower 5G frequencies: Sub-6 GHz.

Wireless charging with MagSafe

In the housing, the device has a magnet: MagSafe. This makes wireless charging much better. Wireless chargers with MagSafe can now automatically click on a magnet in the back of the iPhone: This makes it much easier to place the device exactly right on the mat, and it is no longer the case that a small shift prevents wireless charging turn into.

Another advantage of the MagSafe technology is that you can now pick up the iPhone while you continue to charge it wirelessly. A MagSafe charger clicks securely into place. Wireless charging is also very fast: in combination with a MagSafe charger, charging speeds of up to 15W are possible. This allows the iPhone to charge wirelessly twice as fast as was previously possible. Charging with a ‘normal’ Qi charger is also possible, but then clicking is not possible and the iPhone has a lower charging speed of 7.5W.

Price iPhone 12

The most affordable 12 mini costs € 809. That is the same price as last year’s entry-level model. The ‘normal’ iPhone 12 is a hundred euros more expensive. These are the prices:

  • iPhone 12 mini: from € 809
  • iPhone 12: from € 909

Apple has opted for a phased release this year. The iPhone 12 can be pre-ordered since Friday, October 16. You can order these from Apple, or stores such as Coolblue.
