Marek Tomíšek became interested in economic driving over 20 years ago. A few years later, he took part in the Škoda Economy Run competition for the first time, where drivers tried to drive the fixed road with the lowest possible consumption since 1980. When he won the diesel category in 2011, he began to think on a long-distance economy in the Arctic Circle.

“We went there for the first time in 2013, but we reached two 50-liter tanks“ only ”beyond the Arctic Circle (3,030 km). A year later, an attempt was made to improve and drive the same amount of diesel in Nordkapp, it means 3,524 kilometers from Prague, “said the 38-year-old man on the northernmost point of Europe, which can be reached by car on asphalt. .

When driving slowly, you need to pay attention to what is going on around you. When traveling to Norway, elk or reindeer should also be considered.

Since then, he has regularly driven several racing cars focusing on economic driving or record (longest possible route on one electric car charge or one full tank) and has taken them as a laboratory where he is constantly learning a new stuff thanks to cars. development.

“I focus on what works in normal operation. In extreme racing conditions, every change in the car is reflected and I get new advice. In short, I cut off the view and I can then advise others,” says an experienced expert with petrol, diesel, energy saving hybrid cars, electric cars and LPG and CNG cars, and is also the holder of the Czech record range. and an electric car at a distance of 850 miles.

She is now considered a “mother of all roads” on Route 66 in two U.S. tanks. In the meantime, he used his knowledge of economic driving courses, which he founded and led. After the invasion of Russian troops on Ukraine, after which gas prices rose sharply, there is increasing interest in them.

Marek Tomíšek arrived in northern Norway with an average consumption of 2.94 l / 100 km. Computers on the board show a consumption of 2.8 l / 100 km, but it is usually inaccurate. Consumption according to refueling is decisive.

According to him, the problem is a bit that there are a lot of tips for driving attention, but not all of them apply universally to all types of cars. For example, he said that heavy braking and acceleration lead to higher fuel consumption, but while the first rule is truly universal, the second is not yet.

Therefore, Tomíšek has chosen the following five rules for eco-driving to apply to all types of vehicles, and only for vehicles with automatic transmission, hybrid and electric vehicles, some tips on the omitted changes:

1. Take care of your car

The economical ride is not just about the ride itself, but starting from the garage or service. It is necessary to regularly change the prescribed oil (not saving on it) and filters. In addition, it is necessary to adjust the wheel geometry correctly, which affects not only fuel consumption but also tire life and even safety, because it affects traction (affecting slip and possible slippage). It is also necessary to regularly check the tire pressure and keep it at the prescribed value, because underinflated tires mean higher fuel consumption.

Another important area is the car and the car. Unnecessary things in the car increase the weight and thus the consumption, and for example, roof rack, in addition to weight, also significantly affects aerodynamics. Especially on the highway, they significantly increase the consumption and noise of the car. Those who do not need it should be removed.

2. Drive smoothly

Smooth driving is the key to economic driving. However, gentle driving starts at the very beginning of the journey. Don’t overheat the engine before you start, because when it idles, it not only increases unnecessary consumption, but puts more. It does not produce enough heat at idle speeds to warm up to operating temperatures at lower outside temperatures. Therefore, start immediately after starting and warm up the engine while driving, but drive more carefully at first because it is cold.

Along the way, watch carefully what is happening around you. When you have an intersection of a few tens of meters in front of you, where you will have to stand, it is not helpful to accelerate. Then the fuel flies unnecessarily through the exhaust and the energy grinds the brake pads out of it, which will then be paid for.

This is why it is necessary to anticipate, and when you see a situation that will require a slowdown, do not accelerate unnecessarily. If you cut, brake only with the engine in advance – you will drive the section with zero consumption and save the brake pads. But if you react even earlier, you can use the so-called “sail” in neutral, which is the most effective when you no longer need to brake.

3. Keep the engine at top speed

If you are driving at a steady speed on a level surface, drive at the highest possible speed for the engine to run at the highest speed. These usually range from 1,500 equals for supercharged engines and start around 2,000. However, it is best to see the engine and listen to the sound. If you have a clear path ahead of you, use cruise control.

Of course, the engine needs to turn more when starting and it also depends on the load. At higher loads, the engine must be kept at a slightly higher speed. But always change as soon as possible so that you do not crank the engine unnecessarily. The start should be sensitive, but there is no fear of stepping on the gas. If you have a clear path ahead of you, it is ideal to go to the highest gear as soon as possible, which is usually the most effective.

But again, follow the sound of the engine, especially riding, where higher speeds are also required. Even so, owning one is still beyond the reach of the average person. On the contrary, do not overdo the engine – this will not save fuel, it will only damage the engine.

4. Do not drive unnecessarily fast or slow

Even on the roads, there is no reason to drive unnecessarily slower, because consumption does not rise sharply to 90 km / h. So drive what regulations and traffic situations allow. There is no reason to drive slower and delay other drivers. Here, too, courage is essential – before the turn, remove your feet on the gas earlier and do without braking.

On the highway, it pays to slow down a bit, because above 100 km / h, consumption usually rises steeper, so between 110 km / h and 130 km / h, the difference in consumption for ordinary cars is a struggle at 1.5 liters per. 100 km. Theoretically, 100 minutes will make a difference between 8 minutes and 24 seconds, but you should drive on an empty highway, where you will maintain these speeds all the time. In real traffic, the time difference decreases and the “save” time when driving fast is within five minutes per 100 miles.

However, if there is heavy traffic on the highway, try to speed up to 130 km / h when overtaking, so as not to delay drivers who want to drive faster. After completing the overtaking maneuver, let the car “sail” back to its 110 km / h.

5. Plan your trip well

Plan your route well in advance according to what suits your car and driving style. For example, I would travel from Prague to Ostrava with a smaller city car (e.g. Citigo, Fabia) on a more northerly route around Hradec Králové and via Mohelnice, while with a “motorway cruise” (e.g. Octavia, VW Passat, Volvo). sedan, Mercedes) I would choose the road to Brno, which is longer but the whole highway.

In order to drive a longer road faster, I definitely have to drive on the highway faster. Which, especially for a city car, will lead to a greater increase in consumption. On the other hand, in a car built on the highway, consumption does not increase as much as you drive faster on the highway due to a different transmission.

However, it is good to plan your travel time if possible. It is ideal to choose a time when there are no rush hours, which will also have a positive effect not only on consumption, but also on the time spent on the road. And regardless of when you travel, online navigation and updated traffic information (e.g. Mapy.cz, Waze or Google Maps) will help a lot, which will find a better route in case of a convoy. It will save you money and time.
