John Lewis civil rights icon hospitalized

Spokesperson Brenda Jones told CNN that Lewis was under routine observation, but she did not give details about the nature of her illness or where he is hospitalized.

WSB-TV stated that Lewis was being treated in a hospital. According to Lewis, 78, he represented Georgia's 5th congressional district, which includes much of the city of Atlanta, since his election in Atlanta. 1986.

In February 2011, President Barack Obama presented Lewis with the Presidential Medal of Liberty, the country's highest civilian honor.
The longtime Democrat was a young activist and leader of the Non-Violent Coordinating Committee of Students. In March 1965, he joined Martin Luther King Jr. in a campaign for voting rights in Selma, Alabama.

But nonviolent protesters approached Edmund Pettus Bridge In Montgomery, they were confronted with heavily armed state troops and local police. When the march refused to turn back, the demonstrators were beaten and beaten.

Images of "Bloody Sunday" – and Lewis, photographed under assault and fractured skull – helped galvanize the Voting Rights Act, which was enacted by President Lyndon B. Johnson of the months later.
