On Saturday, at 00:00 hours, 450 runners will start at El Repelao to face the 75 kilometers and more than 13,000 meters of accumulated altitude crossing the three large massifs of the Picos de Europa, in what will be the XVI Travesera Cafés Oquendo Picos de Europa, the "Race of mountain races".
It will be the most international edition, with runners from nine countries and representation of all the Spanish autonomous communities. The uncertainty of weather conditions, with the recent snows recently, make the 2019 edition present many unknowns.
In the men's category, the big favorite is Manuel Merillas, who knows the route like no other and has planned his entire season to beat his own record of 2015. He will try hard to put Javi Dominguez, who already knows what it is to win the Travesera (2017 ); Fran Piñera, winner in 2014, perfect connoisseur of the route and one of the riders who moves best in technical areas; Raul Pérez Nestar, who after completing a magnificent 2018 will want to leave his stamp; and the French Naher Passaret, winner of the Ultra Trail Andorra, and Thomas Galpin, winner of the Ultra de Hautacan. In the women's category, Silvia Triguero is favorite to arrive at the head of Arenas de Cabrales. Uxue Murolas, expert mountaineer and winner of Desafío el Cainejo in 2018, will try to make it difficult, as well as Claudia Gutierrez (second in 2018) and Raquel Santoveña.
The Travesera will leave Covadonga, with ascent to the lakes to overcome the western massif through the Holy Jou and go down to Cain. Then the runners enter the central massif to ascend the Dobresengo canal (1,900 meters of positive height gain) until reaching Horcada de Cain and continue its descent to the Vega de Urriellu, ascend to Collada Bonita and descend through the valley of Moñetas to the vegas de Sotres.
