Latam passenger traffic fell 93.4% in July

In the case of Chile, domestic transfers fell 94.4% to 114 thousand people.

Latam Airlines Group yesterday delivered its preliminary monthly traffic statistics for July 2020, figures that are compared to the same period in 2019, where there is still no evidence of a rebound in activity.

In the report, the company revealed that passenger traffic – measured in revenue per passenger kilometer (RPK) – decreased 93.4%, with a transfer of 733 thousand people, compared to 11.1 million a year ago. Meanwhile, capacity fell 88.5%.

As a result, occupancy decreased 35.9 percentage points to 48.5%. Meanwhile, international traffic represented about 26% of the total movement of travelers in the month.

In the breakdown, the airline pointed out that, in the case of its hub in Santiago de Chile, domestic traffic fell 94.4% to 114 thousand people. In the case of local flights in Brazil -whose subsidiary joined Chapter 11 in July-, the movement fell 85.6% from almost 3 million travelers to only 432 thousand. Now, compared to May, in the latter country, a significant increase in transfers can be seen.

In the accumulated of the year, the firm moved 30.63 million passengers, far from the 72 million in the same month of 2019.

For cargo transportation, Latam reported a 22.5% decrease in tons handled. This translates into 224 thousand tons; in addition to a reduction in capacity of 45.3%.

In the seven months, cargo fell 13%, equivalent to 1.77 million tons transported.
